antidepressants and acne??

hey all im new here and I just wanted to ask a question. I started to suffer from acne when I was 17 i went on a course of antibiotics and it cleared up completely but a year later it returned with a vengence! I have been on many antibiotics since then I cannot go on accutane because I suffer from depression anyway. My dematoligist told me that people on antidepressants do tend to develop oiler skin and spots and i was just unlucky. Thats true because I used to have normal combination skin now its oily pretty much all over. I am now on minox and it seems to be working (fingers crossed) thanks. Rosion xx

Re: antidepressants and acne??

That is just MORE proof that acne is a disease of the mind.
An antidepressant CLEARED me of acne! The antidepressant isn't causing oily skin your depression is... Some people say they get acne from antidepressants and some say it helps do to it's effects on the hypothalamus INDIRECTLY.
Some anti-depressants work with re-uptake of neurotransmitters and some work with actual receptors.
But all in all AD's have a primary action.....
To COOL hyperactivity in the limbic system.
THe hypothalamus and limbic system have a VERY intimate connection.
In my opinion drugs to help acne shouldn't be traditional antibiotics and such, they should be psychoactive ones. I don't if that's safer or not (both have downsides, from a morality standpoint) but they do attack/address the root cause. Antibiotics did nothing but progress acne with me. Accutane worked but it started to come back about 6 months later. My skin was horrible in texture from accutane. My skin is now finally starting to return to a baby smooth texture. I devote this to Wellbutrin, adrenal caps, and most of all Skilled Relaxation.
By the way for those of you who actually think the way I do (if there is any) lol , I bought this professional mind machine on the net last week and I can try to control my brain frequency through entrainment. What's even weirder is when I start to a program with beta waves my face starts getting oily somewhat. I use beta entrainment to help with concentration. When I work with ALPHA waves it completely goes away...
Kinda weird..
No wonder Dr. Stoll had so much trouble with the AMA
I personally think he hit this root of acne thing with a bullseye.
Anyway that's my opinion and it works for me ...
Whatever keeps ya clear and happy right? <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

Re: antidepressants and acne??

No dr. Stoll didn't tell me to take antidepressants .
Dr. Stolls recommendations were to complete the 3 legged stool of wellness. (You can read what that is on his website) I did ask him about me takin the adrenal caps and AD and he said that it proves his theory correctly but backwards and temporarily because you need to do SR to empty the hypothalamic fight or flight build up or storage.
I started taking them cause of accutane, but then saw some interesting things. I prob. should of been on em before accutane and I prob wouldn't had to go on it.
Accutane DID cause the depression but it's all about genetic susceptability. It prob. just advanced an underlining pre-existing condition.
I have had brain scans done with the latest state-of the-art nuclear technology called spect (single photon emission computed tomography). It shows how your brain is basically working with blood metabolism. Really crazy sh*t was goin on .
I can't really say if you should take an AD if you say your not depressed. I believe becasue your not "depressed" currently your under a chronic subconcious anxiety (which is a pre-cursor to depression) or like Dr. Stoll says your hypothalamus is constantly stressed with the fight or flight response.
I didn't know I had alot of stress but according to Dr. Stoll one cannot feel it. I've listened to him and added some other brain supplements like an AD, mega doses of fish oil, vit E, phosphytidal serine, gingko biloba, and recently adrenal caps (for adrenal support) and i'm completely clear and feel great. I've been clear for about 5-6 months.
I SINGLE most important thing for acne is Skilled Relaxation. I'm not saying it's easy cause it's not but if you practice and induce alpha waves for 20 min twice a day you'll be completely clear.......
Cmon guys why do people have acne and ALOT don't if we all have the same sebaceous glands ,same hormones, same P-acne bacteria?....Just think about it.
Like I said before i've never seen ANYONE that has a "happy go lucky" type of life with acne AT ALL!
Acne is only the tip of your ice berg from what is REALLY going on inside, when you have a chronic skin condition or other unexplainable disease/condition.
The medical community ( not in neurology or neurobehavioral )really frowns on thinking the mind causes the body to react good/bad.
To them every problems ROOT "fix" is organic in the body's biological sense.
I've takin MANY AD's and some are not all safe i might add lol, ( did this not for acne) but to try to repair the damage I saw done from my earlier years of smokin weed, drinkin heavily and other stupid sh*t and the one that works BEAUTIFULLY for me is wellbutrin.
It's also prescibed via Zyban to help quit smoking.
If i were you i'd stay with your current regimen and add in SR. For more information and help read over on the Stoll BB cause there is some guys over there that are "pros" at it ....lol
Hope this helps,
good luck

Re: antidepressants and acne??

Nope sorry never paxil, but have tried zoloft, effexor, wellbutrin. Effexor helped some zoloft was too tiring for me. It seems anything that worked with seratonin didn't agree with me too well. I need more of a stimulating AD.
good luck

Re: antidepressants and acne??

You can take accutane if you've been depressed before as long as you just find a derm that basically knows what they're doing. Don't take it if a derm says: "Look i'm sorry you just can't take this medicine as good as it is you just can't tolerate it. There's nothing we can do."
You know what you do about that stand up say Fu%k off !
Then go find a derm that is an assistant clinical professor at a university.
If you wanna find out about Dr. Stoll search on the web for him and his BB will pop up.
Use the google search engine.
