Spironolactone side effects??

I went for my derm visit today. I mentioned Spironolactone to him and he had no problem giving me a prescription. I am a little nervous to take it because I just read all the warnings and side effects. I am surprised my derm didn't even put me thru any blood tests or exams. All he said was if I feel lightheaded or have headaches then call him.
If anyone is taking Spiro PLEASE let me know if you had any side effects or problems with it.(Or how long it took to clear you up.) I am in a wedding soon and I will be so upset if my face gets any worse.
Thanks!

Re: Spironolactone side effects??

Hi there

I took Spiro awhile back and I think it helped somewhat with the oiliness and acne, but it's hard to say because I switched to a new antibiotic when I started the Spiro. The main side effect that I noticed was constipation. It wasn't that great of a cure though. The only thing that has helped me is Accutane which is bringing me beautiful skin right now

Re: Spironolactone side effects??

I'm on spiro right now and i'm 99% clear. It took 1 month to see some improvement and i was 95% clear after 2 months. The only side effect, which is bothering me is the dry skin.I have red, itchy, flaky skin on my hands and some parts of my face.I think having dry skin is better than having cysts on my face so i'm happy..
[This message has been edited by ~Cansu~ (edited 02-12-2002).]

Re: Spironolactone side effects??

couple of quick questions:

how old are you? I am wondering if my derm will put me on this..i'm only 20 but i've already been through accutane, retin a, tazorac, etc.

What is your dosage?

About how much is the prescription? Are you takingn generic spiro?

Thanks in advance

Re: Spironolactone side effects??

I am 32 and have had acne for 2-3 yrs. I believe its definetly hormonal (just on my lower cheeks, jawline).
I just started Spiro yesterday. I take 50mg once daily.
I have read so much about Spiro helping hormonal acne. I hope it helps me. I have a really good prescription plan so I only paid $5.(I didn't look on the receipt to see the real price.) I think Spiro is the generic form of Aldactone... Not sure.
Let me know if you have any more questions!

Re: Spironolactone side effects??

Hi debbie,,,,do you take the spiro every day or do you take it for 3 weeks, and then off a week? Just curious becuz I have been doing some research on it and from what I have read, it seems like you are on it for 3 weeks and then off of it for one week (almost like being on the Birthcontrol Pill)--I had used Diane, but into my 2nd month developed some more serious side effects (pain and numbness in my calf..possible blood clot?!) so I stopped it immediatley....now I have 3 lovely cysts on my face...so am considering asking my gyn about the spiro...I too, have hormonal acne...cysts on the chin and jawline and more recently developing them on my forehead...have two in the middle of my forehead now...about an inch apart from each other look likes I have horns erupting from my forehead--I just hate dealing with this! I am 43 years old and have worse acne now than I ever had as a teenager!!!! I am thinking the spiro may have less side effects than the BCP...please tell me more info about it...thanks so much for your help!

Re: Spironolactone side effects??

Jooxwoman, I have only been on Spiro for a few days. My Dr. didn't say anything about taking it for 3 weeks then off one. But I do have to see him again in a month. I am praying Spiro will help me. I am also taking Yasmin. I read taking BCP and Spiro together is a good thing. I am 32 and always had beautiful skin until a few years ago when I went back on BC after my daughters birth. I take 50 mg of Spiro once daily. I try to drink alot of water too. Let me know if you have any more questions! I'll keep you posted.
