Please help, will do anything

Hey y'all;

[short version: I'm at my wit's end, I will do literally anything to clear my acne. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will go anywhere, do anything, I just want to stop thinking about my skin 24/7, can't do this anymore. Severly depressed, please help if you have any ideas!]

I know I'm not alone in this, but right now I feel like I am. I'm 32 and have had acne since I was about 14, and it's worse now than it's ever been. I feel like I've tried everything possible, and I've had pretty much no success in clearing my skin. Today, my skin is covered in cysts and bumps, as well as hundreds of red spots, icepick scars, and an overall orange peel texture. It's mainly on my cheeks and jawline (in fact my t-zone is generally totally clear). Makeup can't cover the mess that is my face.

Just to be clear on how much I've tried, 2 rounds of Accutane (pretty much no results either time), birth control, doxycycline, erythromycin, minocycline, retin-a (still use, why not, but it doesn't help my acne), spironolactone, clinda, differin, bp, blue light, ipl, tca, glycolic peels, jessners, gluten free, dairy free, sugar free...&on & on &on. Everything I've tried has been given several months of adherence, but nothing has worked.

Ok, so; I have several months in which I'm off work, out of school, and can effectively avoid people. No doubt I'll be doing that, but I'd love to use this time to do something for my skin. Honestly, I don't think there's much out there that I haven't looked into, but maybe I'll get lucky.

I'm wondering about a phenol peel, but I still have active acne...I'd really like to address the actual problem before getting to the scarring.

Anybody? Bueller?

Re: Please help, will do anything

Well i know where your coming from and how you are feeling, im 49, had acne forever it seems. I definately connect with your situation, ive had many periods in my life where ive avoided people, stayed indoors basically down to the embarrassment that acne causes.
I have also taken every antibiotic that can be taken.
For me i am on my second course of Roaccutane and thankfully the results so far are good.
I live in England, my derm only advises minocycline as an antibiotic or a course of Roaccutane, he says its not worth bothering about anything else.
I did use a drug called Trimethoprim though which is used to treat urinary infections. This did help with my acne and i was fairly clear for awhile, so you could give this a go. I have never been told to cut out anything from my diet. Have you tried Dianette?, that seems to get good reviews from females. I wouldnt waste your money on other things, but maybe try Trimethoprim or Dianette.
All the best.

Powerful story. I'm sad to hear it, but hopefully something on this board will help you with your acne.

My girlfriend used to use a bunch of antibiotics, but nothing was helping her. Then she tried Acnegen and saw improvement.

If you seriously tried eliminating gluten and still have no results maybe give it a shot?

Looking for the cure to acne ...

Re: Please help, will do anything

I haven't tried half the things you have (can't afford it) but I can relate to your experience. I used to avoid people and yes, at some point makeup couldn't cover it all up. I knew I had sensitive skin and any acne left a mark no matter what I did (or didn't do) to it.

I invested my faith in a few dermatologists but unfortuantely, they didn't understand what sensitive skins meant in treatment. In addition to acne all over my face, I ended up with 'cigarette butt' looking black circles all over my face on top of the acne. They successfully burned my face.

Since then, I have manageable acne (maybe 1 or 2 at most) with old scars that are fading.

A few things: hot towel compress with a cool splash of water afterwards to close the pores, high-potency multivitamins (ask your doctor), Omega 3, and a water/lemon mix (look it up) as a toner. As well, if after the hot towel compress you're 'oozing', I usually apply more heat if I think I can clear it or put a topical ance cream on the spots overnight made to dry them out.

How long were you on these different meds? I developed bad cystic acne and use spironolactone. I had to take a strong dose a few times a day for 6 months- 3 months before I saw any "major" improvement. I now- years later, take a smaller dose, but I recently ran out and didn't have insurance, which triggered it again. I basically had to start all over with the strong pills until my body readjusts. It's a life long battle/prescription to control and it took a lot of patience but I now know how to get the results I was desperate for.

Re: Please help, will do anything

Hey, Kate. I've been suffering from acne for a quite a while and it's been getting worse. Recently, I've read that Desitin really helps acne, and am on my second night of trial. I have used tea tree oil a few days ago, as well as Benzoyl Peroxide last year and they just irritated my skin even more and made my acne even more inflamed. I am now trying to be as gentle to my skin as possible and hit the "basics".

My regimen is now:

1. Cleanse off Desitin with Avene Thermal Water on cotton pads
I will use a cleanser if I can't get the Desitin off

2. Apply Rosken Dry Skin Repair moisturizer (TTO really burnt and dried out my skin)
3. Apply makeup

1. Remove makeup with Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil
2. Cleanse with Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser
3. Soothe my skin with Avene Thermal Water on cotton pads
4. Apply a thin layer of Desitin using a cotton bud on my spots (basically everywhere)
5. Dab on a thicker layer of Desitin on spots before bed

In addition, I have tried apple cider vinegar diluted with water (1:1) but it just dried my skin out like crazy. I am now consuming 1 tbsp with water a day.

Just wanted to share my regimen with you 'cause I've read that a lot of people have been successful using Desitin as a spot treatment.

Let's hope success draws really close! And don't worry, we are all beautiful even with acne. Everything gets better! Moreover, we'll know who's "real" (pertaining to the people around us). Hope I helped.

Re: Please help, will do anything

My son has had very good results using bentonite clay internally. I stuff capsules with it and he takes 5 each morning with about 12 oz of water and doesn't eat anything for at least 15 minutes to give it time to pass out of the stomach.

Another thing that others have mentioned is getting off any foods you might be reacting to but it can be hard to know which ones are causing the problem. The ones mentioned such as dairy and gluten are the most common.

I can very well understand from my own dark days 4 years back. Acne Scars can be real messy when it comes to your facial look and other people's stark remarks. I tried many creams for scars, oil based and chemical based but i should say it really detoriated the problem. Maybe my skin was very sensitive and the dark scars became more serious.

I have had bad acne since I was 13 and now I'm 25, I'm just now starting to get it to clear up, and by how?

1. Do NOT drink anymore sugary drinks (I think what you drink has a more major effect on your body than what you eat), so no milk, no juice, no soda, no wine, NOTHING with any kind of sugar. Only drink water, tea (w/o sugar), club soda with lemon is fine, or something to that nature.

DO drinks LOTS of water! Stay hydrated.

2. Stop eating processed foods, as Wheat especially contains a lot of carbs which equals SUGAR! If you are consuming too much sugars and carbs, your body can only process it so fast, and then overload will just be exported out through your skin, and bacteria love sugar.

3. Do not wash your face with a washcloth, only use your hands, and use very mild soap for sensitive skin, always use moisturizer with SPF.

4. Use an aspirin honey scrub 2-3 times a week. Just crush up some aspirin, squirt some honey onto it (make sure it's 100% real honey and not honey with corn syrup in it). and scrub it onto your face for a good 2-3 minutes, then rinse with water. Your skin will feel so much softer afterwards.

5. I use this stuff called Benzaclyn I got from my doctor. I usually don't trust these acne medications, as they never work. But I think it's a boost to my already working regimen. It contains the usualy Benzoyl Peroxide, but it also has Clindamycin which is making the difference, it's a type of antibiotic. And so far no dry skin (I only use a minute amount on the problem areas).

That's my advice, and it's what has worked for me.

Re: Please help, will do anything

First step is to find a REALLY good dermatologist. The right dermatologist would be able to provide you with the best possible treatment. Although Accutane is one of the treatment, it's long term effects to your liver. My dermatologist avoided prescribing this to me during the course of my treatment for adult acne. Instead, she started me with doxycyline for 90 days to combat the acne causing bacteria internally. Then she followed this up with the topical antibiotics trying out differin, benzaclin, and then eventually Tazorac as the last resort. The latter worked miracles although a very powerful exfoliant. I was on Tazorac for a good two years and it really worked wonders. Not only did my acne disappear, but also helped maintain my skin. It also help to use a very mild facial cleanser such as cetaphil for sensitive skin. So now the adult acne is gone.
