Accutane

I have dissecting cellulitis of the scalp. My dermatologist want to put me on accutane for 5 months. I have read the info he gave me. It sounds dangerous. I am scared to try it because of the side effects. I had taken doxycycline before and it has messed up my stomach. I read online it is used on cancer patiences as a chemo pill. Has anyone taken this pill? Could you tell me what you experience with it? I have to make a decision to tell the doctor.

Re: Accutane

I have taken Accutane before and it worked wonders to clear up my acne. Side effects are dose dependant, and although they sounds scary, most people tolerate it pretty well. Do you have acne as well as the cellulitis? If you take it, ask to start with a low dose or, because of the expense, a moderate dose but every other day or twice a week can work. It is more cost effective to take 40mg twice a week than 10 mg daily, for example. The main side effects are more nuisances, like the dry skin, dry lips, but if you get visual disturbance or depression you may need to stop it. Absolutely be on good birth control while on it if you decide to take it. Hope your insurance covers it!

Re: Accutane

hi! i am currently talking accutane for the second time in my life. i took it at 15 for acne and had absolutely no dangerous side effects...only the expected side effects of dry skin and eyes, cracking lips. all of them were manageable, and now at 31, i have no residual effects from taking it. i am on my second round of accutane because my acne has come back. my dermatologist told me that about 25% of people who take it need another round later in life, particularly if you took it earlier than 17-19 like i did. if you decide to take accutane, since you are female, your dermatologist will be required to follow your case extremely closely while you're taking the medication, so if there are any issues, your doctor will help you. but even with that said, serious reactions are quite rare. all medications have POTENTIAL side effects, but that does not mean you will have them. i try to keep in my mind that my doctor recommends treatments that he knows have greater benefits than risks...in my experience, the benefits of accutane have far outweighed any risks.
