hello all...new here

hello everyone. i am new here. just found this board by accident and am excited to have found it. my daughter, 6 yrs, has just recently (last week) been diagnosed with adhd. i know a few children with it and i guess i kinda figured that she had it too but was in denial. we have started her on strattera. the doc started her on 40mg and she got a really bad tummy ache and had to come home from school. so i had them change her to 18mg to start. last night she took her second dose. we give it to her at night because she is a drama queen and exagerates a lot. so we figured that by giving it to her at night, she will have forgotten about it by morning. she still gets a tummy ache but its not that bad. no other side effects yet. she will be moving up to 25mg after two more days.
my brother, who is 19 and lives with me, also is adhd but he is not on any meds yet. he most likely will be in the next month or so.

i am looking forward to getting to know you all.

Re: hello all...new here

Hi and welcome to the board. My daughter is almost 6 and taking strattera 40 mg.She started on 18 mg .After a week she went to 25 mg.We noticed some improvments so she was raised to 40 mg after 2 weeks. It is really helping her mood, behavior and hyperness. It is not helping her attention like the stimulants did but I still like it.When she was on Concerta she had tics, would not eat or sleep. The only side effect from Strattera is tiredness since we increased it.She was tired when she started on 18 mg but it got better after a week. You have to start on a low dose and go up slowly. You also have to take it with food.My daughter's dr said to give it with peanut butter so she eats a pb&j sandwich for breakfast before she takes it.I don't know why your daughter's dr started her on 40 mg.Is he a specialist or pediatrician?Good luck and hang in there because strattera can take 4-6 weeks to work.

Re: hello all...new here

brenda,
does your daughter swallow the actual pill or do you sprinkle it on something? meghan's doc(pediatrician) said that we could do sprinkle it on something. some sites say yes and some say no. i called the pharmacist and she said that it was okay. so i sprinkle it on some koolaid or oatmeal or something. if your little one swallows the actual pill, how do you get her to do that? the very first time meghan took it, she swallowed it finally after a million tries and a million tears and then she was traumatized.she is a big drama queen. believe me, i told her not to tell anyone in school that she was taking medicine so i could see if the teachers noticed a change. when she got to school, that was the only thing that came out of her mouth the whole day. i was just curious to know if there was some sort of trick that you use.

meghan does get tired on it too so i am giving it to her right at dinner time. she also gets an upset stomach. by the morning though, she has completely forgotten about it. oh yeah and she gets dry mouth. i have noticed that this evening. after about an hour or so she kept saying that she was thirsty.

anyway, thanx for the reply. it has been helpful.

Re: hello all...new here

Sherry,My daughter has never had a problem swallowing pills. She started when she was 3 on ritalin and swallowed it on the first try. Some people say practice with mini m&m's.I've heard some people say not to open strattera and some say you can. They say that you need to be careful not to inhale it or get it on your skin or eyes.I would just do what the dr said. You also need to drink plenty of water with it.My daughter stays thirsty too and drinks alot of milk. After she has been on it for a couple of weeks I would try giving it in the mornings. It really doesn't last 24 hours.I give it at 6:30am and it wears off around 7:00pm.

hello all, about 2 years ago my son was dignoised with adhd too. But I have found out that adhd doesn't really exist. I have found out that doctors can say kids has this so the schools can get funding for any kid that has been dignoised with add, or adhd. You all may want to do some back ground checks on this. Have a nice day.

Sweet Roxy, I taught school for 15 years and I am unaware of any additional funding that schools receive for students with adhd. If you know of a specific provision that does provide funding for schools based on the number of students with adhd I would be very interested in researching it.

The only link to funding I can think of is Section 504.
Section 504 of the Rehabilitaion Act prohibits any program (including schools) that receives federal money from discriminating against individuals with disabilities. Since schools receive federal money (for various programs) they must make special accomodations for children with disabilities.

Some kids with adhd qualify for a 504 plan. When this plan is written the specific classroom accomodations that the child will receive are decided upon based on the idividual needs of the students. There is no extra funding given to schools for 504 plans.

Hmmm... A disorder that shows up on brain scans is a scam created by educators??? Now, THAT is food for thought...
