Summer break from meds? - ADD / ADHD Message Board

I have 2 boys ages 7 & 9 on meds, one ADHD & one ADD. Both have been off of meds for one week due to the Dr. being out of town, and not able to write prescription soon enough. But, I was noticing that both were doing well at their Summer camp, and no complaints.
They both normally only have problems at school because they have to concentrate and focus.

Do you think it would be okay to go without for summer? What is your opinions? Does anyone else have children that they take off their meds for the summer?

Hi Natalieatsis- I have taken my daughter who is 9 off a few times on the weekends and for the most part things go fine. I do notice that I need to repeat myself more often when she is not taking her meds, but I figure I can live with that. I am going to ask her doctor next week what he thinks about taking her off for the next month or so and then starting her back up a few weeks before school starts. I will let you know what his opinion is next week.

Thanks for your help. I am leaning more towards keeping them off the meds til school starts back up. They are doing wonderful off of it. They also seem so much happier and playful.

I have talked to a doctor about taking my son off of his meds and what affect it would have on him. I was told that the meds get into their system so fast that if I were to take my son off of it that if he started to get to where he needed it again that I could give it to him and it wouldn't take long for it to have its affects. My ex refuses to take him off of it at all but I have actually failed to give it to him on a couple occasions and he does just fine. One doctor actually told me that he recomends that a child be taken off of his meds during the summer unless it is an extreme case.

i took my son off concerta last week because he is so skinny and does not eat well on it. he is inattentive type - not hyperactive. i'll see how it goes for now but he is going to a sports camp and i've read that exercise and protein ( which i'm feeding him) are good for add. he is doing very well so far. when school starts - he will have to start up again - but we may try stattera or even b'calmed.
