Please help, son is impusive

My son is 13 and has ADD. He is very impulsive, does not think before he acts.
He just got in trouble for playing with a lighter with about 4 friends. They were lighting leaves, plastic and who knows what else.
He has gotten detention last week for talking loudly in the hallway. Has no interest in sports or any school functions. Really doesn't apply himself in school.
He is on Strattera. Can anyone help?

Re: Please help, son is impusive

I can't tell you what is the right thing to do, but here are my 2 first impressions...

The first thought is that your son must be in the *same school* as my son used to attend! Detention for talking loudly??? Puh-lease! I personally believe detention should be reserved for more serious behavioral problems. Try not to be too alarmed when he gets detention for minor infractions like this.

The second is to talk to his doctor. It doesn't sound like he is getting optimum benefit from the Strattera alone. Perhaps he could benefit from a dose change, an additional med, or a different medication. While my son still doesn't see the need to put alot of effort into his school work, I have noticed he's definitely more interested in extra-curricular activities since beginning medication.

Re: Please help, son is impusive

I agree with the idea that detention is a little much for talking loud. They are kids after all. Anyway, his problems with impulsivity etc. are not likely to improve with age as testosterone levels impact add and his is on the rise.
Also his mischief is still very harmless and innocent for his age. There are far more serious things to make impusive decisions about and I'm sure he and his friends will find them soon. Lack of impulse control could be very dangerous for a boy/girl at that age, especially if he's not involved in many other activities. It sure landed me in some places when I was young and undiagnosed. Thank God for gaurdian angels. I would talk to his doctor, puberty changes everything.
