Question Chance of having ADD?

I'm 28 years old, female and have always had difficulty keeping my mind on one thing. I've never been to see a doctor about it because I was raised to just deal with problems, not to treat them. It dawned on me about a month ago just how bad my concentration is. I can't read a book past the first few pages because by page three I'm thinking about what a friend said last week about her dog and that I need to by stamps tomorrow. I've never cooked anything in my whole life that I didn't burn because by the time I've closed the oven door I remember six other things that need to be done and only remember the food cooking when I smell familiar scent of dinner burning. At work is even worse. I'll get up intending to fetch a report from the office and end up making four trips back and forth to get the same report because by the time I get half way to the office door I've started on a half dozen other things and by day's end I'll be lucky to complete even one or two of them! My question is does this sound typical of ADD and should I even bring them up to a doctor or do I just really need to try focusing harder on details and live with it? Thanks for your time!

Re: Chance of having ADD?

The symptoms you described do sound similar to ADD so you might want to find a doctor that specializes in the disorder and get tested. They can prescribe medications and offer counceling options to help you deal with the disorder if that is in fact what you have.

Re: Chance of having ADD?

Thanks for the reply. I think I will make an appointment. After reading some other posts by members (imagine, reading the posts before making one!) I've decided that it's, at the very least, worth a try. I've been on Wellbutrin for a few months for my depression but it hasn't helped the anxiety problems I have. I'm noticing that it might not be depression and anxiety that I have after all. Hmm...very interesting. Guess we'll see what the doc says.

Re: Chance of having ADD?

Just another quick note that might help. Welbutrin has been helpful for some with ADHD but it is generally not given to people who suffer from anxiety. Something about it actually makes the anxiety worse in a lot of people. When I first went to my doc he didn't want to try that because I was having a lot of anxiety problems. He put me on celexa for the anxiety/depression. Just letting you know, you might want to mention it when you see your doctor.

Good luck

Re: Chance of having ADD?

I've got a lot of the same symptoms as the people on this board
All I have to say is that if I do have adult ADHD, then it would be a relief to finally find out what my problem is.
I've been going to a therapist for over 6 months now for anxiety and depression, it doesn't seem to be helping much at all anymore.
In my last post I explained some of the symptoms I have, and believe myself that it may be ADHD, like I said it would be a relief.
I want to get a test for ADHD, but have been waiting for the next therapy appointment to talk to him about it

I have problems focusing on something, if I am reading something and itlooks like it will take too long to read I don't bother and lose interest. I get bored VERY easily, very low self confidence (esteem)
etc
