Exclamation Its only in my head....

What is it with people that they can't believe ADD is a real problem? They think that this whole ADD thing is just an excuse for being lazy. Has anyone else had this problem?

Re: Its only in my head....

Had to chuckle, MissTee, about your title "Its Only In My Head". Yep, it IS in your head - in your brain! For reasons we don't fully understand, your brain works differently than those of the majority of the population.

Yes, it is extremely annoying when people "don't believe in ADD". You might read the thread "Has anyone ever considered that "ADD" could simply be a personality type??" There are several pages worth of discussion on this topic there.

Welcome to the board!

Talking Re: Its only in my head....

I can relate. My brother says it is an excuse to be lazy. Wouldn't it be great if there was a way to trade brains with these people for a day. They would be begging for mercy after an hour. Then they would believe.

Re: Its only in my head....

OOOH YOUR NOT KIDDING!!!!Trade brains!!!LOL If only! It is the most FRUSTRATING thing in the world. Like I REALLY enjoy living like this. I would love it if I didn't have to read something like 90X in order for it to sink in! I sometimes think I'm just stupid. I have to figure out away to control this. Its getting worse. Maybe its because I have 2 kids.( You get dumb with each child I hear...thats what the pregnancy books said, I used to call it Baby Brains, but it hasn't gone away and my babies are now 2 1/2 and 5 months)My fiance goes insane sometimes. And I feel bad..I wouldn't want to deal with me all day long. My mood swings are horrible. I've been contimplating taking meds or finding a psycologist to help me focus. It really depresses me sometimes when I think how much harder I need to work at just being NORMAL!

Oh, I HATE this!

I've been telling my mom for the longest time that I suspect that I might (and she might too!) have ADD. She usually just laughs at me, or thinks it's silly that I would make an excuse for my "laziness".

But now that I told her a few days ago that I have an actual doctor's appointment to get evaluated, she got really upset and we almost started getting into an argument about it! She doesn't really believe in ADD at all. In her mind, she thinks that there's "no pill that will make you turn off the tv and stop watching The O.C. and go read your school books for hours".

I told her that ADD meds are not a "quick fix" to getting more "work done", but instead is supposed to help people who need extra aid in staying focused, and maintaing their attention span. OF course, if anyone starts taking medication for ADD they will NEED to train themselves to become more "proactive", and get rid of the bad habits of procrastination that they had when they were not on meds.

I just don't understand why my mom is so scared that I might have this disorder that she doesn't even want me tested! THat's like someone who suspects that they might have cancer refusing to even get tested! How stupid is that? Do people really think that ADD is some disease, or that you're "dumb" if you have it? I mean really...my mom is acting strange about this.
