Arrow ADHD & Trichotillomania?

i was diagnosed with ADHD when i was a child, and i believe i still have it at 21 years old. i've also pulled at my eyelashes for as long as i remember, and just recently discovered that it simply wasn't a bad habit but is indeed a subset of OCD called trichotillomania.
i've heard that these two "disorders" are often related. is this true?? i know it may not necessarily be the case all the time, but does anyone else with ADHD also pull at your hair? is there any advice you can give to prevent/stop pulling??

Re: ADHD & Trichotillomania?

Hey Quirk

ADD does not completely go away. Some people get effected by it without realizing it. Also I know of for a fact that ADD and OCD can effect each other. I went to a college for LD people and I knew a guy who we will just call Jon that had ADD and OCD and the two disorders interacted with each other in extreme ways, some of them funny. Good example...one day Jon and I were hanging out doing laundry and talking. I just picke up the load of my clothes and threw them all in at once just like anyone else do. Jon on the other hand picked up one piece of clothing at a time, folded it, then put it in the washing machine. When he finally finished (which was about an hour later) we sat and talked about how one of our teachers was torchering us with too much homework. As soon as the machines finished washing our clothes I grabbed the entire load of cloathes and threw it into a dryer. Jon picked up one piece of cloating at a time, folded it, then put it in the dryer. One time some friends of mine moved the stuff in his room exactly one inch in one direction but didn't damage or steel anything. He called security when he discovered it. I could thell more funny stories about Jon but even I I had time to type them you wouldn't have time to read them. I just feel bad cause he reported it to security and the security office had to fill out paperwork about it.
My point basically is as strange as it sounds ADD and OCD can go togerther

I have ADD and I am always picking at my hair, if I get bored I pick at my eyelashes. I get my hair cut often so I dont have any split ends to pick at.

It is very common for people with ADD to feel like the have to figit with something while they are in class, a lecture, seminare, etc. The stuff that Danielle is doing sounds very much like this. If you have ADD, to try to stop yourself can be emotionally and in some cases psychologically harmful. I suggest you get some of what my fellow LD friends and I refer to as ADD Toys to carry around with you. These can be things like Koosh balls, Rubix cubes, or other things you can figit with wile focusing on someone talking. Just don't get things that will make too much noise or distract the other people in any way.

Respond to this if you have any questions

Best of luck
Ethan

Re: ADHD & Trichotillomania?

My psychiatrist said that OCD and ADD are somehow related chemically.
All I know is that my OCD meds make my ADD worse and vice versa.
