help - ADD / ADHD Message Board

My son (is 8)has been dianosed with adhd and tourettes..specifically he has just the tics symptoms...he sees the school psycologist, a nuerologist,and soon a psychiatrist.he is only on one med right now(clonidine for his tics..which helps ) but we want to get him something to help with his adhd...which at times i wonder if he really has or hes just a boy and if a med would help him control his"energy".....I want to be careful because ADHD is commonly diagnosed and children are unnessecarily medicated. My son talks constantly in school,He is easily distracted and desires to be the center of attention all the time.He is repeatedly getting detention and has even gotten ISS (in 3rd grade)....i am at my wits end and cry often because it is so frustrating that i cant do anything to change his behavior(punishments and rewards dont really work).He rambles and often doesn't make any sense.He acts immaturely for his age.Some of his behavior (mostly at home) is picked up from his fathers house(he goes on weekends and there are other kids around diagnosed with adhd, bipolar,and more)but that is a whole additional issue...

.he is always very argumentative and mouthy...and emotional....So if anyone has advice for me i would apreciate it .

The ADHD behavior could be picked up from his other home. Do you think the dad has ever slipped him some meds as a control method? I'm just putting that out there, because I used to know a woman who would give her kids cold meds with antihistamines(would calm them down/make them sleepy) in them just to get a break from having to deal with them! I used to think that was horrible and one of her kids ended up with some mental issues(don't know if the practice caused that or not).

I don't mean to say your husband does anything, but I just wonder why your son has tics....of course, it could have been caused purely by nature but common ADHD meds can actually cause them.

I do know that stimulants given for ADHD can worsen pre-existing tics so I wouldn't want to go that route.

my son is not on any med for adhd and no i dont think that my son has been slipped any med not prescribed for him....and my son has always had adhd behaviors ( it became noticable when he started school)and his tourettes developed over the past year or so.He has picked up other behaviors of disorders he dont have......

Could be some emotional problem effecting him? I know as soon as a little girl I know got a younger sister, she's started to display ADHD whereas before she was extremely intelligent and mindful. Do you think something is subconciously bothering/disturbing your son, like any situation/person in his other home?

that is a big possibility,that is why my son sees the school psycologist weekly,but actually for his tourettes(tics)which gets worse while he is at his fathers and decreases when hes not there.My son is starting to see a psychiatrist too.
