Is the school responsible for testing?

I went to the doctor's with my 5 year old daughter today, the doctor told me that I should tell the teacher to proceed with having my daughter tested in school. When I talked to the teacher about it she agreed that my daughter needed to be tested but said that it was my responsibility to have her tested outside of school and bring in the results. Is the school responisible for the testing? It is affecting how my child is doing in school and has been brought to my attention by my child's preschool and by her kindergarten teacher. Where do I find laws and regulations to back up having the school pay for the testing, if it is their responsibility?

Re: Is the school responsible for testing?

Laws vary by state so I would do a search for special education laws + the state that you live in. Generally, if there is a problem that is affecting your child at school, they should provide testing because they will have to implement a plan that will accomodate your daughter's needs in the classroom. Their findings through said testing will dictate what those needs are. Hope this helps a little bit!

Re: Is the school responsible for testing?

Mati, what kind of testing are you talking about? The child's regular education teacher can refer her to child study. The child study committee would decide to precede with testing such as a psch...etc.or they could decide to not do anything.
Good Luck

Depending on your local school system it would be the school's responsibility for any testing of ADD or ADHD and LD's (learning disabilities). If LD's are detected then your child would receive special education. I question the age at which your child is...I know my son didn't develop symptoms till he was about 7 and in second grade.

Re: Is the school responsible for testing?

This varies greatly from district to district and state to state. Special education teachers/diagnosticians can NOT test for ADD like they can for other learning disabilities because it is considered a medical condition. The school must have a psychologist (with a PhD) on staff to be able to test for ADD. Otherwise the testing must be done outside of the school.

I recommend that you call the office of the Director of Special Education for your school district to get your questions answered.
