Does anyone with ADD ever feel like they are deaf? - ADD / ADHD Message Board

Ok so someone will call my name and I never hear them the first time..only till they have yelled out my name do I hear them. After like the fifth time.

Also, on my cell phone I have the volume turned up high and still have trouble hearing what is said.

When in a direct one on one conversation with someone I have to ask the other person to repeat themselves quite often a lot of the times..

People always have to ask me to talk quieter because I talk louder than normal alot..blurt things out often...Even when I've been told that, in the middle of some excitement I may feel, I've already forgotten to be quite and will talk loud again!

I know I am not really deaf because I have had hearing tests done to prove so..

Do you think I talk louder because of all the "Static" going on in my head and so I feel I have to talk over that static? All that jumbled mess of info in this crazy brain of mine..and maybe that is why I cannot hear very well too?

Any one else have this same prob, and know why this is, and how it can relate to ADD?

I feel this way sometimes...like if somebody says something to me and I wasn t in a conversation with them I hear what they say and it takes me a scond to compute what they just said....so I ask "huh" or "what" or "pardon" then before they can reask the question i figure out what they said and answer...it irritates some people because they wanna know why you asked them to repeat if you heard them the first time.....

Exactly! I do that as well..Thankyou for responding to me..I was just curious cause this happens to me often and I wanted to know if it was just me or if others were the same...Cheers....----Charly

What you describe sounds alot like CAPD - central auditory processing disorder. It is very common in individuals with ADD and, in fact, some experts think that it is actually just a part of ADD.

Yes, I am the same. Even as a young kid in school, I remember telling my mom "I can hear but I can't always understand". She thought I was nuts. I later learned that I am NOT an auditory learner. It's only been fairly recently that I've learned that what I have is called CAPD.

Thought I had hearing issues as well. Had my ears checked and I'm okay there. The "I can hear you but I can't understand you" thing hit the nail on the head.
