my brother's goin crazy, plz help! - ADD / ADHD Message Board

Ok so my brother is 10 and being a 10-yr-old hes a little outta control... but he also has a hearing problem on top of ADD. So hes ADD meds cause him to be more calm during the day but he doesn't go to bed until like 11 or 12 every night. UNfortunately that makes him in a ****y mood and I have to deal with it. How do I deal with a little boy who will not shut up yet can't hear me tell him to be quiet? And how do I get him to go to bed? Ugh, i need help, he's driving me up the wall!

Unfortunately delayed onset insomnia and other sleep disruptions are typical side effects of ADD drugs. Maybe some chammomile tea near bedtime or calcium supplements might be natural aids to sleep but sometimes it's hard to override the drug effects, but you could try.

I give my son Melatonin at bedtime to help him sleep. It really does work too....and Melatonin is a natural supplement, not prescription.

alittledeserted, is your brother oral only? (doesn't Sign?) If so, he may just have situtional ADD. A lot of oral-only dhh kids have "ADD" b/c they have to expend so much energy on spoken language and remememering how to pronounce words correctly. Even if he has real ADD, learning Sign could really help him calm down a lot! (andit would help him with social issues too, which MANY if not most dhh kids have issues with!)

alittledeserted, Why are you responsible for your brother? Even if he didn't have issues that make his behavior difficult to bear, he's not your responsibility.
I have 3 grown daughters, all 5 years apart. Sure, the older ones looked after the younger ones while I went to work and to school (I'm a single parent).
But if things got out of hand, I made other arrangements. That's what the person who is legally responsible for the child is required to do.
So, even if you are being paid to babysit, if it's not working, it's time for your parents to find another solution.
