dangerously impulsive

Hi, i was diagnosed with ADD when I was 15, I'm 17 now and noticing some new symptoms that freak me out. I'm not hyperactive, I'm inattentive for the most part, but I've been experiencing feelings of impulsiveness such as the need to sneak out of the house and drink and do really stupid things just to feed this adrenalin addiction. I think this goes outside the lines of normal teenage rebellion, I just crave the feeling of knowing that I'm doing something I'm not supposed to. Does anyone think this is a new side of my ADD or something different?

Re: dangerously impulsive

Hi,

I can definitely relate to what you are saying. For many years during my 20s and 30's I was very restless. I often did impulsive things ie go out by myself drinking just so that I could be around people. Drinking too much.

I had a restlessness I couldn't define. I always felt as if there was something else to life than sitting home and reading.

I thought it was loneliness that I was responding too. Or depression. But now I realize it was ADD.

I learned to channel some of that restlessness into activity. (I got involved in theater) However, even that did not always relieve the feeling that I need to be somewhere else and going something else.

The ony advice I can give is that drinking is probably the worse thing to do to fill the void. Instead go for an impulsive walk or bike ride. Write your thoughts down. Get involved in something creative.

I understand the need for some sort of stimuli. I lived with the restlessness for years.(still do) NOw it's more like I feel anxious about things in a non-specific way and my mind is always seeking something to occupy it.

Try to make healthy choices for yourself and realize that the restlessness inside you is not because something is missing in your life. It is your ADD mind that cannot settle down.

I have ADHD and I had impulses to steal my friends toys when I was little (I actually did a few times and they never found out to this day) I still get tempations nowadays but I have them under control and I dont steal anything.
