What age does a child have to be to check for ADD or ADHD

I was wondering if any one could tell me what age a child has to be before they can be tested for ADD or ADHD. I have a 20 month grandson whos father has ADD and Bipolar. The grandson is really getting out of hand.

Check for a sleep disorder first. Then look into behaviour desensitization. You should be able to consult a pediatrician about expected behaviour and who would be best to see.

Sincerely,

Re: What age does a child have to be to check for ADD or ADHD

Hello Tngal1964.
i have two kids and they both have ADHD/ADD and my son was 5 when i had him looked at for adhd and my daugther was 9 when i had her looked . it is all up to the docter if they are willing to do the test . you would have to ask the docter when you see him or i would call and ask him or her if they could just tell them what your grandson is doing and see if they can do the test on him. and tell them that his dad has add and bipoler.. and u would like to fine out what is going on ....

i hope things get better for u

Re: What age does a child have to be to check for ADD or ADHD

The child usually needs to be about school age, so I would say 20 months is not the best time to try to diagnose something like ADD.
