What type of doctor for ADD?

Bob - you'll have to let me know who to see - I'm 37yrs old with ADD (I think) - horrible memory over the past few years, can't focus or concentrate and over the years I've always seemed to drift off if you're not discussing something I'm totally interested in. I'm trying to fight this but it's so hard.

I'm on Concerta 18mg right now and was on 10mg of Adderall before but I got off of it almost a year ago because I heard about 20 deaths in Canada (******d it) and they banned it so I got paranoid and got off of it.

I'm really struggling right now with either depression or job or personal life or ??? I'm starting to think it's the concerta but yet I need my memory back and need the right specialist to figure this out for me. So tired of going from one drug to the next and the doctor doesn't even know or care. Such a shame.

Thx Bob

LL29,

You just asked the most difficult question, "who do I see." I found qualified medical care for ADD/ADHD by reading ADHD books, websites and forums so I knew "qualified" when I saw it. The divergence of often conflicting opinion makes ferreting out the truth difficult to say the least. [removed]

Learn all you can about the disorder. The knowledge you gain will enable you to find "who to see." Do not be afraid to ask questions. The "interview" will cost you an office visit - a very small price to pay compared with the "price" of incompetence. Generally you need a psychiatrist for med management and a psychologist for psychological counseling. To the best of my knowledge only ADHD specific cognitive-behavioral therapy is effective.

Thanks Bob and I actually called a neurological clinic that does ADHD testing and went and got a packet/tests to fill out. I guess they review it and they call you to schedule an appt. or mail you a letter if they feel you haven't met their ADHD parameters?

I did have a bad childhood that I've worked on over the years so I really don't think that's my big problem. I'm pretty sure I've put most of that behind me but unfortunately ever since I got medicated - depressing things have come up and lack on interest in any job for that matter so I know it's not "me" per se but moreso what's going on physically. Granted - could be a combination of both and I'll go see a psychologist just to make sure but I'm pretty convinced it's either the medication or lack thereof it.

Thx Bob

Laurie
