Question Stimulants vs non stimulants

My daughter is 6 years old and was just recently diagnoised with ADD. My ex husband is really giving me a hard time about allowing the doctors to put her on a stimulant medication. They assured me that my daughter would better be suited on a stimulant to help get her on track with school because shes becoming far behind. I have explained till I'm blue in the face but he's being very difficult about the whole ordeal any advise on how to deal with this would be ever so helpful!!!!! I have also offered for him to speak to the team of doctors about the choices they have made for our daughter but he insist that he will just blow up and it wouldnt be wise of him to talk to any of them. Me myself thinks he's embrassed because he's being made to realize thier is something actually wrong with our daughter and he dont want to admit it!

Re: Stimulants vs non stimulants

My husband and I did not like the idea for putting our 6 year old son on medicine either. Against our better judgement, we tried it for a week. After a range of emotions from endless crying, anger and dazed, we began to look into an all natural route. It has been a blessing. My son is a sweet normal active boy who I do not worried (or ashamed of) how he will behave in public.

We follow a healthy diet that only differs because I choose different brands at the grocery store.

Re: Stimulants vs non stimulants

This sounds like I wrote it, my husband is the same exact way, however, after the numerous conferences with our son's teacher I think he realized something had to be done, I did not want our son on stimulants again, so I decided to put him on Straterra, he does very well on this medication. My husband also does not want to admit that our son is a little different but very special. I hope it works out for your daughters sake.

Re: Stimulants vs non stimulants

IMO, the worse thing a parent can do is be afraid of the label. My exhusband didn't agree w/ the label, but as far as I'm concerned he doesn't have the right to say whether or not he agrees (I have full care, custody and control while he has reasonable visitation). He watched an episode of Dr Phil in which they were talking of food allergies and misdiagnosis of ADHD (this was a few years ago). We finally did more health testing to rule out anything else as a reason (did a blood workup to check for diabetes, thyroid and then did common food allergy testing). The only thing that came up was egg yolk and it wasn't even strong enough of a reaction to be considered an allergy. We did the extra testing because he was already on a high dose of Adderall XR and I felt we should at least look at the possibility before going to a higher dose or stronger medication. My son has been on stimulants since 5 and we just switched from Adderall XR to Concerta. Currently, my ex husband hasn't had any contact or communication w/ the kids in 2 yrs on his own doing. Maybe print up information about ADHD and the use of stimulants (email links if he has internet availability). That way he can read about it in his own time and after educating himself, he can rationally discuss the options available.

Re: Stimulants vs non stimulants

I am in a similiar situation however I am the one who doesn't want to put my daughter on stimulant medication.

Does anyone have recommendation on natural or homepathic remedies that have worked?
