Please help me with My 7 yr old Daughter

Hello everyone,

This is my first time posting on this boards. My 7 year old DD is having a VERY hard time in school. She is in 2nd grade, and this has been going on since kindergarten. This year she seems to be having a hard time "focusing" and she is very talkitive, had problem keeping her "personal space" and also disruptive in class. I talked to the school psycologist, and we did the Parent/teacher scales. Her results came back as "significant". So I made an appointment with her Dr and he seems to think that there is no problem with my DD. He said that if she was learning, had not been sent to the princapal, and wasn't really falling behind in her work there was no issue. That I should put her in a after school program ( Swimming, dance) to help her with her social skills. This poor child is getting punished almost everyday after school, for either having a bad day at school ( They flip tickets from Green, blue, then red for behavior) or forgetting her homework. My Husband and I are really at a loss as to what to do, we don't want to punish her if this is something out of her control. I feel like a failure as a parent, since I am not getting any help from her Ped. I gave her teacher permission to talk to the Dr about whats going on, she has called and left 3 messages with him, and he has not yet returned any calls. Can someone, anyone who knows anything about ADHD help me... I am making another appointment with another Dr for a second opinion. She really is a sweet gal, and I don't want her to have such a tough time everyday. Thanks so much for helping.

Dee

Re: Please help me with My 7 yr old Daughter

We are in the same boat w/ our 5yr old daughter. She's still too young for an assessment, but the tantrums that she has are horrible. She also has a problem focusing and get her classwork done.
It sounds like your dd is a boarderline case and maybe she'll be just fine (w/out drugs etc.) . I know I had terrible ADD growing up-- it's much better now-- and I turned out fine. What I would have wanted for myself-- looking back is more guidence and positive reinforcement (I think drugs would have been a plus in my case too). Definately your dd's teacher needs to be on board. If the teacher isn't patient enough, or if the class is too big you should see about moving her elsewhere.

Re: Please help me with My 7 yr old Daughter

Im a 17 year old male who at one time was in the same position as the children mentioned above, <removed> It seems to me that almost every kid with either an active imagination or who might be a little hyper is automatically judged as having AD/HD or ADD without any REAL in depth study, as a child almost every single one of my teachers and every single one of the school consulers told my parents I had ADD, my mother on the other hand didn't want me on any medication so I didn't have any at that age, later on in about 5th grade I was put on Adderall, a drug used to treat ADD, it did help somewhat at first yet my parents instilled in me the idea that no matter what life throws at you, you should try to overcome it. Because of thier constant support and how much they helped me learn and find my own ways to learn things now I only take the medicine when I absolutely have to (i.e SATS or Exam Days) and I feel like a better person because of, also because most of the drugs used to treat ADD also have very harmful side affects (insomnia, loss of appetite, anxiousness, etc) so overall it was a very good choice, now I can happily say I'm <doing very well in school> and quite a few other things that my parents were told I'd never be able to accomplish without the medication. Just because someone tells you that they need help doesn't mean they really do, especially since I know from personal experience that many teachers are so stressed that they'd want your kids on anything so they'd sit down, regardless of if the kid really needed it. Just remember that when dealing with a possibly addicting drug sch as Adderall or Ritalin that in the end the decision of wheter or not to give it is yours. I hope this helped!

My oldest daughter has had problems all through school she is now in 4th grade and should be in 5th. She has been diagnosed with ADHD and it is a constant battle with both her school and with the people she comes in contact with. The only thing that has helped me is just being persistant in fighting for her education and working closely with her teachers in trying to help her stay on track. I am hoping that with puberty the effects will lessen.
