Question Adderall and Spelling mistakes...

I started taking adderall a couple of weeks ago and now I believe I am on an appropriate dosage and am maintaining well. Anyway, I have noticed an unusual side-effect of spelling errors in anything I write.

I transpose letters and more commonly type or write words as they sound instead of how they are spelled. I use to be quite a good speller and now I am finding myself talking to my professors at school and telling them my condition just so I do not get marked off for spelling.

I did not notice this before the introduction of the adderall, so I am relatively sure it is related. Has anyone else had a simmilar side effect? If so has anyone learned to deal with it or correct it in some way? It just seems that my brain (while I am typing or writing) is switching to a less-developed mode, if you will, by sounding things out on paper even though I know how they are spelled.

Re: Adderall and Spelling mistakes...

cme12299,

My thought is that the Adderall is merely helping you be able to hyper-focus. I can be in "reading mode" where I am able to focus on what I'm reading, or "writing mode" which enables me to marshall my thoughts into (hopefully) coherent messages. It's difficult for me to do both well during a given period. That is, I have to switch back and forth between them. My suggestion is to get your thoughts out without worrying about spelling (the English language isn't the easiest even for good spellers!!!), and then switch to "reading mode" and check for spelling.

I'm assuming that most of your writing is on the computer. I can't write worth beans on paper any more. Or rather -- I always used to panic at the thought of trying to compose on paper -- the computer has been my savior. I can write, rearrange, expand and delete thoughts, and then at the end read it over for spelling and minor clarifications.

If you're having to turn in hand-written assignments, then perhaps someone else has some suggestions for you. My brain goes into spasms just thinking about it.
