I have had a hell of a time getting diagnosed adhd even though my tests show me at the top of the adhd scale?
I have 2 boys (6 and 12 months) I most likely have post pardom from the birth of my 12month old but has anyone been told depression can mimic the signs of adhd?
My 6 year old has it and I started noticing i also have the symptoms, was tested and im at the top of the adhd scale. I spoke with my mother who said she knew something was wrong with me but thought it was a personality defect or something. When I was growing up there was not alot of info about adhd or how to get tested or the symtoms. She noticed my behavior from the age 7 as what we now know as adhd symptoms.
I have been put on 2 meds that for me sucked (saraquil and zoloft) and im getting depressed just trying to get on the right medication. Now they are recommending prozac and STILL waiting on the adhd meds! (it took mayjor nagging from family and friends to get me to go in to the doc for this in the first place)...this is frustrating!!
Believe me, you're not alone; many of us have had difficulty getting diagnoses/treatment for our ADHD. The idea that ADHD continues to affect us into adulthood is still new to the medical and mental health establishments, and so there is still a lot of misconceptions and lack of understanding about adults with ADHD.
To answer your questions, yes, depression and various other mental and physical disorders can mimic the symptoms of ADHD. If you found that your symptoms started out of the blue after getting depressed, I'd agree that the depression was likely the culprit, but you say that you've had these symptoms since early childhood, that sounds like ADHD.
Who did your tests and decided it was depression? If it wasn't a psychologist/psychiatrist that specializes in ADHD, this is what I would recommend:
To get started, see your doctor. Get a full physical to ensure that everything is physically normal. After that, find yourself a referral to an ADHD specialist, ideally one that specializes in adults with the disorder (perhaps the psych treating your children can be of assistance in this matter) and have your testing done by them. Hopefully that will get you a proper, no question diagnosis.
While you're waiting for all that, get yourself the book "You Mean I'm Not Crazy, Stupid or Lazy?!" by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo and give it a read, it's a handy resource for adults with ADHD. You can also feel free to try the various 'alternative' ADHD fixes, such as Omega-3 oils, coffee, 'natural' supplements such as Focus Factor and clean living. Some people derive some benefit from these options. Bob seems to have had good effects with a certain mix of amino acids, you can find his posts under Addprogrammer.
Above all, feel free to keep coming here for advice, support or even simply a place to vent. Keep the faith and don't give up, the difference in your life that proper treatment can make is immense.
WOW! Thank you so much for the wonderful advice and Im going to go get that book even the title sounds like me!
What happened is I went to take my kids to my reg medical doc and the nurse said to the doc that she thought I had some postpardum. The doc came in asked me some questions and thought that i could have bipolar. He was scared to put me on a antidepresent becuase if I was bipolar i could go off the deep end. So he gave me saraquil. That made me feel like a floating head in a dream and my limbs felt heavy and I was tired this is after one dose of 50mg and i was supposed to be taking 4 after the 5th day! After the first does I stopped becuase of the way it made me feel. I went to the psychologist/psychiatrist and he gave me a test and said Im also depressed (please note that I never went to anyone saying Im depressed and Im not balling all the time Im more ****** off and agitatable then anything) I also told him what the doc thought about the biopolar and he disagrees --> (psychologist/psychiatrist) I told him I know its adhd test me he did and he tested my son....son needs meds but not me not yet!?? Anyway he sent me back to doc again and I was put on zoloft which had bad side effects so i only ended up taking that 4 days. my psychologist suggested prozac for a week to week and half then start the adhd meds. I go back to doc they put my son who weighs 48 pounds on 5mg adderal and me on strattera 40mg. Reg medical doc still thinks I may have bioploar even though I went to the psychologist he suggested and he says no. I hope this stuff works! I m just so frustrated by all of this.....If they don't figure something out soon everyone else will suffer not me Im fine with being a b*tch lol
oh and your response about the coffee would probly explain why I drink 2 entire pots of coffee a day!

Many of us self medicate without realizing what we're doing. Your rather significant coffee consumption may well have been an attempt at self medication whether you knew it or not (many others self medicate with food, with adrenaline, with illicit substances, so the health risks of excessive coffee consumption aside, you could have done much worse).
Strattera is an ADHD medication, though it's not a standard stimulant. I know that it has been shown to help control ADHD symptoms, though it takes two weeks or more to work, give it time. If you don't get good results from the Strattera, I would continue to work with the psych to see if you can get Ritalin/Concerta/Adderall in time, as you may find that these help.
On a side note, if you're drinking that much coffee in a day, make sure you're getting lots of calcium, ideally from a non-milk source. Coffee is very acidic and can lower your overall pH, which causes your body to pull calcium out of your bones you restore your normal balance (which can be bad over the long term. ).
Thank you so much your very very helpful. I never really thought about the coffee until you wrote some people use it instead of meds..I think I may end up going to another medical doc since this one is kinda making me mad.
My girlfriend supposedly also has adhd she was given adderal 20mg. She gave me a couple becuase we know thats whats wrong with me and it worked very well. I could think, clean, not lose everything or forget and I didn't freakout...Im thinking she doesn't have adhd and was mis diagnosed becuase she told me she cann't get to sleep til 4am. She acts like she did before she got sober from meth. I was told that people that have adhd don't get wired when taking the stimulants. I do not, I can sleep no problem and I actually act normal according to family members when I have taken it, they could tell I took something because I was normal. lol I told her something is wrong becuase i did not have that experience on adderal.
I guess the thing that really gets me mad is they just pretty much threw adderal at an x(meth) drug user! But are fighting giving it to me when I have no history of any of that crap. I smoke cigs thats my only addiction other then my coffee lol
Thank you for letting me vent...I will try what the doc gave me and see how it goes.
I don't really have time to respond properly, but a note or two.
Your friend getting wired on Adderall doesn't necessarily mean that she doesn't have ADHD, it means her dose is too high. The balance with stimulants in ADHD adults is to give them enough to stimulate the underactive centres of their brains (the parts responsible for organization, attention, etc) without making them wired. The reason for stimulants bringing ADHD people down is that at the right dose, it allows their self control centre to function properly, thus making them calmer.
Use of meth may have been your friend's attempt at self medication. Then again, she may not be ADHD, it's always a complex question.
Well you sound very wise. I wonder why they put my son on adderal right away and me on the strattera? I think they should try a non-stimulant for my tiny little boy first don't you think?
I have my doubts about my friend..Im wondering if she knew just what to say to get her fix. She was about 120 pounds as a drug user then gained alot of weight and went to about 185 after stopping and after getting her adderal is 115 in less then 6 months. It sounds like her dose is to high and they just upped it again to 30mg! It was fine with her of course.
If you have ADHD, the "right" dose of adderall will not get you wired. If you don't, that same "right" dose will do almost nothing except perk you up a little if you are particularly tired. Taking too much, whether ADHD or not, will make one wired and insomniac.
What is the right dose? Varies enormously from person to person. Some adults take 5 mg per day, like me. At one point I was getting benefits from 2.5 mg. Some need 60. If I took 60, I wouldn't sleep for a week! There may be differences in the way different people metabolize it or something (too tired to look it up).
How is your son doing on his medication?[/QUOTE]
Well today should be his 2nd day but im not sure if he took it! I gave it to him and said, "we will take them together". he then ran to the bathroom slammed the door and I said, "Im going to wake up your dad!" lol He opened the door and said he took it. I didn't hear the toilet flush or the water turn on i checked the garbage and didn't see it. So far so good. He did tell me he felt funny and his hair felt windy? I'll make sure I mention this to the good doc when i see him. The stuff im taking made me feel sick within 20min like puking sick then that went away and I got chills and felt like i drank to much coffee(hair and skin crawling feeling) and surprisingly enough I had only a 1/2 pot of coffee. So I know it wasn't that. It also wore off by 4pm i noticed...Im not sure what to think..I felt the same other then the physical yuckyness.
I also read up on what im on and there are several reasons they do not put kids on this..High suicide rate and it can stunt their growth.
