New Step-mom questions - ADD / ADHD Message Board

I'm a new step mom to an 8 year old boy. I want to learn as much as I can to help not only him but our family as well. This little boy has been through SO much in only 8 years. I could write a book on his life but most importantly we have full custody of him and are trying our very best to educate ourselves. We need as much information as we can get our hands on. He has been on various medications in which we have either taken him off of or have changed the dosages. Besides medication there has to be more help out there. We realize that his medication is needed right now but in the future we would like to see him off of it. Right now he is taking Ritilan LA in the morning and a 10mg Ritilan at 4 pm. He is also on Risperidol (?spelling) I'm not sure of his dosage because we have tried to lower it. From what we have seen and the school has reported that he has been doing ok with his anger. Since school started in August we have had only one phone call. Just like anybody else I think that he was just having a bad day. Of course topping it off with another child picking on him. If anybody could offer information and support it would be greatly appreciated.

hi there i have a son who is 11 years old and im still learning about adhd lol i think the best advise i can give as a mum is find out everything you can about adhd on the net or in the library but i think you will find the best way by learning from your step son and how life is for him.... my son recently started high school which has set him back a bit as i get phone calls neally every day lol the medication does work for him to a certain extent but ive noticed every time we go back to the doctors he has it increased and other meds given. i think its all trail and error and getting the balance right with the meds and the situation if you know what i mean lol..
