Post Atomoxetine -- better living through chemistry???

Greetings:

I am curious about the new med atomoxetine, or Strattera, as it will be marketed.

According to the press, it is a "selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor." It is not a stimulant, and that is my reason for interest.

If anyone has any experience with this medication, or can provide additional information regarding its efficacy/usage, I would be grateful for their response.

Thanks for your time.

Appreciatively,

--Nacho

I have asked as well having read about this stuff. I asked my son's Doc about it too. It isn't FDA approved yet, supposeedly in Spring of 2003. I read some test results that showed it to be as effective as Ritalin but, I wasn't sure who's test results they were. (I mean the manufacturer or an outside source). I am very interested in info on it for my son. He just started Wellbutrin in addition to his Metadate because of his anxiety and because his tics came back.

Dear rebecarooni:

Thanks for the reply regarding atomoxetine.

I'd like to add the fact that the FDA has actually already approved the medication, but it is unclear as to when the drug will be readily available to consumers.

Supposedly the trials indicated that atomoxetine is as, or even more, effective than Ritalin. Whether this is documented by the manufacturer (Lilly) or independent sources, I'm not exactly sure, but this is a very interesting new development for the treatment of ADD.

Thanks for the response!

Hmmm, interesting...Do you know of any article about comparing wellbutrin with it, or taking wellbutrin with it ? Because that sounds like a good combo.

No -- haven't seen anything comparing it to or about coupling it with Wellbutrin. All I know of Wellbutrin is that my doctor hasn't had much success with it for treatment of ADD. But I suppose the SSRI/SNRI combination of both meds might just do the trick for some people.

Oh, yeah. I'v also been told by my doc that it should be available sometime this January. Whether that's New Year's Day or the 31st, I don't know, but is should be hitting the market that month.
