My son was 7 when diagnosed w/ADD w/LD,he was started on Ritilan, a very low dose (if I remember correctly 10mg./one at the a.m & one at lunch. He did okay. The wieght lose was not too bad. Other than an occasional upset stomach, he did fine.
Since then, as he got older, the Ritialn didn't seem to compensate, so they put him on a higher dosage, explaining that his age/weight was the cause it wasn't helping. We did not agree.
He was switched about 11-12 yrs. old to Adderall. He was again on a very low dosage. He did again okay in 6th-8th grade. No real obvious side effects. Lose of weight was a biggy. He complained of chest pain here & there but it always seemed to follow a heavy day in gym. It was very sporadic though.
He is now 15 1/2 yrs. old. As of his freshman yr. he was failing MANY classes. The ped. said that the Adderall was not enough, so we switched yet again to Adderall XR, and out nightmares began. He lost 15 lbs.(of which he didn't have to begin with) in about 3 weeks. He was a zombie, he was severly depressed and grades were in a spiral downward. We called it quits!!!!
he is drug free. We have chosen to try ANYTHING but drugs!! He goes to a tutor T/W/TH and he takes Gingko 3x a day and has a 1000 mg. of Omega-3/day.We are trying "vision therapy". Results coming Monday morning. He has since passed 2 s.s test, has since passed a algebra test with a "c". Before he was getting an "F".
I know this is not everyones solution, but for us I will NOT subject my child to any more drugs. I do understand that it is necessary alot of times, every child is differnt, and it is a personal decision. I gave them to my son for many years, with results we could live with. It seemed to all change when he went thru puberty. Something was different.
I feel for all of you trying to find that balance. We are not home free yet, as he has to repeat 1 class already, and may have to repeat this Algebra class. But my son's smile is back, he is HAPPY, he EATS (any one who has a teenage boy that is not on meds. knows the amount they can eat). He eats!!!!!
I hope what I have said helps in someway? Good luck
Susan
