13 y.o. Anxiety/ADHD...Help

Our son has ADHD symptoms, caused by anxiety. We have tried countless stimulants and Strattera which have not worked. He is taking Prozac and a mood stabilizer to help with the anxiety and keep the moods at bay. Have any of you had something similiar with your child and if so have you found anything to help with the lack of focus, concentration and etc. He is in therapy and he does have an IEP at school. He will be in high school next year and the IEP will follow him, but I am hoping that something can help him. Thank you for any helpful hints:)

If the attention problems are CAUSED BY anxiety, then the stimulants probably won't help. Sometimes, though, ADHD and school struggles can cause anxiety. You and your son's psychiatrist need to sort out which came first.

With ADHD children, though, specific behavioral interventions help a lot. For example, "Child has trouble remembering to write down homework assignments." So you work on that one task, help him develop a workable system. An ADHD coach can help a lot.

That doesn't make much sense to me. You can have both ADHD and anxiety. My daughter does, along with Asperger's. If the prozac and mood stabilizers were working, then the ADHD should have improved as well if in fact anxiety was causing ADHD symptoms.

I would suggest you get a second opinion, or ask your doc to do a trial of either Intuniv or a stimulant in addition to the meds you are using. My dd just began high school and believe me, he will need to be as stable as possible to make the adjustment. Keep trying things until you find something that works better!

Good luck!
