Strattera - Gasping for air?

Hello all,

I am 27/female, and my pdoc prescribed me 40mg Strattera 4 days ago, to take one at bedtime. All blood/thyroid/blood sugar levels were A-Ok.

Last night I was falling asleep, and was startled awake gasping for breath for a second...like my brain forgot to breath. Weird...I've never had any breathing issues in my life. I have stopped drinking (it wasn't a problem before but still) while giving this med a shot. I did take 2 Advil earlier in the day for a leg cramp, that's it.

Other side effects I noticed was daytime sleepiness, extreme itchiness of the skin/scalp, & cognitive issues like forgetting letters when writing or typing words. No change so far in attention span. :-/

I have no health insurance sooo if this keeps up, I'm definitely NOT going to keep with it.

Anyone else deal with the breathing issues?

Re: Strattera - Gasping for air?

CEB1984,

Breathing difficulty is listed as one of Strattera's "severe" side-effects. You should discontinue the medication and notify your doctor immediately.

Strattera works well for a very small percentage of ADHD sufferers. Its side-effects are worse than ADHD symptoms for the vast majority.

Tell your doctor how badly you are reacting to Strattera. Your doctor is obligated to treat your symptoms using an alternative therapy.

I really am amazed that any doctor would prescribe Strattera as a first line ADHD medication. I posted a link to the New ADHD Guidelines. ******** the full PDF text. Print out the document and give it to your doctor. You run the risk of provoking doctor god-syndrome anger. Too bad. Better doc's fragile pride hurt than your health.

If your doctor flat out refuses to consider a scholarly reports published by his peers than it is time to find another doctor.

The bozo doctors out there do us ADHD suffers a lot of damage. Does it not say somewhere in their "hypocritic" (typo accidentally on purpose) oath to "do no harm."

Re: Strattera - Gasping for air?

addprogrammer,

Thanks for your reply!

Fortunately, I got a call back the same day I informed them of the
side effects....They said to stop the Strat & take some antihistamines, and return the next day for a new script. I went in today & doc wrote it out for 10mg IR generic Adderal/1 day, no hassles. Thank goodness!
Double luck, after calling 10 big chain stores...I found a mom & pop pharmacy with it in stock, and they didn't look at me funny or anything (So I've read happens to others).

It's been 4 hours since I took it, and it's such a vast improvement!

Good luck to anyone having trouble finding their meds ... Don't give up.

Re: Strattera - Gasping for air?

Great!

I pessimistically assumed you'd face the typical endless run-arounds.

Wonderful.

I am so happy for you. It did not go as well for me when I approached my GP about the possibility of ADHD. It took me several months to go through the bozos including one of "shrink" types before I found psychiatrist that helped me.

Too cool.

Bob
