My 14 yr old nephew has been treated with meds since he was 2nd grade. He is about to go into 8th grade and his reading level is at a 3rd grade level. He is being raised by grandmother and has many issues; father not present and in and out of jail for drugs. Mother isn't around but when it's convenient, also drugs....I have suggested free library reading programs for the summer, to no avail. He is in some special classes at school this year. Math and reading. I just can't believe the meds are working, or the caregivers for this child, and wonder what would help.
Re: Nephew 14
Unfortunately, medications are just one part of treatment for an ADHD child, a lot of it has to come from the family. He may have other learning disabilities, also.
The biggest thing is structure. He needs to come home and have a spot, like the kitchen table, where he will do all his homework. He probably needs special guidance at school.
To what extent is his grandmother able to provide help? Are you able to?
