My grandson has been on focalin xr, and had some bad side effects. I have decided to take him off the meds. His therapist stills wants him to take it, because he said he won't be able to learn in school. He is very smart and was tested to be highly intelligent. Since we took him off of focalin, his moods are much better, he's not as angry, no pains, or headaches. Has anyone just done therapy with out the meds?

Definitely, many people try treating ADHD without medicines. It's important to stick with the behavioral treatments, though.

And at some later time, you (or he) might decide to try the meds again. Maybe later in his education he'll find that he needs the medicine to help him, and maybe he'll find a drug that works without those awful side effects.

Myself, I took medicine for two years, and it helped me a lot, but now I do reasonably well without it.
