Question HELP FOR MY FRIEND

I POSTED LAST WEEK ABOUT MY FRIEND WHO HAD WRITTEN 2 SCRIPTS FOR HER PAIN KILLERS AND HAD THEM FILLED. NOW SHE IS WORRYED SICK ABOUT THIS. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SCRIPT ONCE IT IS FILLED AT THE PHARMACY. DOES IT GO BACK TO THE DOCTOR OR DOES IT GET THROWN AWAY OR WHAT. IF ANYONE CAN HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

Since I work in the medical field I feel pretty confident in answering this question. If it was a regular Rx, meaning it was not a triplicate(I am pretty sure it was not a triplicate. They are usually in the Doctors office and very hard to forge because the Pharmacist pays very close attention to them since they are used for Schedule II thype drugs like Oxycontin and Percocet.) and she got away with it at the time then she is probably alright. If they were going to question the Rx they would do it at the time she got it filled. They will usually say something like "Its going to be about an hour to fill" then call the Doctors office to verify. Once the Rx is filled the regular Rx that was written is filled and usually not looked at again unless there is a problem. If it was a triplicate(which it was not) then a copy of it goes to the Doctor. She is alright I think but she needs serious help.

THANKS TIM FOR ANSWERING THIS QUESTION. THE PRESCRIBTION WAS WRITTEN ON A NORMAL PAD, NOT A TRIPLET LIKE YOU SAID. SO THE PHARMACIST DESTROYS THE SCRIPT AFTER HE FILLS IT? HOW DOES THE DEA GET INVOLVED IN THESE TYPE OF THINGS, EVEN IF THE PERSON ISN'ST QUESTION AT THE PHARMACY. I AM TRYING TO GET HER INTO A REHAB, AND I THINK SHES READY TO GO. DOES THE DOCTOR EVER FIND OUT ABOUT THE SCRIPT BEING WRITTEN WITHOUT THE PHARMACIST CALLING TO VERIFY IT.

The DEA does monitor all Controlled Substances(from V to II) they can pull up on the good ole computer how many Controlled drugs that Doctor wrote. They do random checks but unless there was a reason for them to investigate that Doctor would not come into play in this matter IMO. Unless the pharmacy calls the Doctor about the prescription and tries to verify it the doctor would be out of the loop. I will admit that when I was on Lortab 10mg I was calling in pescriptions left and right and using 2 of the Doctors I work for. I would estimate that I called in about 900 Rx for Lortab in a 2 year span. I would call in 90 pills at a time. The Doctors never found out nor did the DEA contact the office. I was very lucky not to get caught and thankfully I am off the Lortab and seeing an Addiction specialist and have not called anything in in a while and dont intend to(those days are over). The pharmacy does not destroy the Rx for I think it is 2 years since it is considered a legal document. But after they file it they rarely go back to look at them unless there is a problem. I hope that your friend gets help, it looks like she got away with it this time, but especially writing the Rx, she is just waiting to get caught.

Hi there -

A quick answer to your question -

Your script is kept on file for three years at the pharmacy it was filled at. This way when the DEA comes to audit, they can check it. Also, in addition to the pharmacist that fills it, all narcotic scripts get checked again by the pharmacy manager. This is the point that if there are questions, the doctor will be notified. After the three years are up, the script gets tossed. If your friend has gone at least a week, then she's probably fine. Tell her to count her blessings and NEVER do it again!!!

Hope this helps!!

Dawn
