my boyfriend and I spend about 5 nights together durring the week. A few days out of the week we'll share a few glasses of wine together - no problem. However - it seems whenever we spend a night apart, he ends up going out and getting completely hammered. Our relationship is great, and though he's bored with his job it's not a major source of stress so it's not caused by excessive tension...he has had problems in the past with heroin, however, a kind of on-again off-again thing for 6 years,and he has not touched the stuff in almost 2 years. Could he still have these addictive impulses but just being on "good behavior" around me? Why does he need to get extremely drunk every night we are apart?

He might just miss you. Being lonley is big reason why people drink. Talk to him and see what he says.

DAE . . . if he had a "problem" with heroin, meaning he's a heroin addict, he should not be drinking because he can easily get cross-addicted to any other mood altering substance, including alcohol.

I think thats what really set off my coke addiction. It was when I quit smoking weed everyday, so I turned to something I wasn't addicted to.
