Unhappy Does my mom have a problem?

I haven't posted here, I usually post on the pain management board but I have a question, and after reading here for a while I realize you guys know the signs.

My mom has back pain she has had 2 surgeries that were sucessfull, but has left her with scar tissue that some times causes her pain. She went to my docter that is well knowen for handing out lots of pain meds and she put her on 90 7.5 lortabs every 2 weeks. Now keep in mind now that she very seldom has back pain. Well everybody loves her on them, she is diabetic and didn't do much untill she started taking the tabs Her sugar is down to almost normal with out insulin. She is saying now that they have give her her life back and she loves them and if she doesent take them she is in horrible pain and doesent want to do anything. She takes 4 at a time 30mg. She has forgotton that she went to her to get some "goodies" for when she wanted to do alot of housecleaning or something so she would't hurt afterwords. And is now saying it was all the pain she was in that kept her from moving around and doing things.

Well she went to the doctor again and she gave her KADIAN 20 mg Lortab 7.5-90 of them and ACTQ (fenyntal) lollypops 400mcg. Now she is telling me how she thinks this medicine will help her pain. I don't get it .... How can you go from needing them once a week to powerfull narcs. She has lost 25 pounds and looks so good.
But, Is there a serious problem lying around. She also takes ultram 100mg 3x a day the dr doesent know about that but she likes how they make her feel.

She couldn't get the lollys filled around here noone carried them so they upped her kadian 30 and has started her on roxi5. I don't know what to do, She is a wonderfull lady and a grandmother 5x over. I don't want to overstep, what do you think?

Thanks
Sam

Re: Does my mom have a problem?

Errr...maybe she feels that she is in horrible pain and doesn't feel like doing anything without the pills because she is already physically addicted and when she stops, the withdrawals start.

I take Ultram for occasional endometriosis flareups and even though it is marketed as a "Non-narcotic" opiate, to me it is similar to a weak pain narcotic like a Darvocet. So your mother actually has a lot of opiates in her system --

too many in my humble opinion. The Ultram alone should be more than enough if she just has moderate pain, and should not be taken more than 5 days in a row or addiction possible. I don't know how doctors handle this sort of thing, but you would be within your rights to ask the dr. to send your mom to a pain specialist and also to tell him about the Ultram. A good pain specialist would determine right away what's going on with your mother.

I am going to be very blunt, forgive me. What you posted here and if you've listed these meds properly your mom has a severe problem. There is know way I could list all the implications and I am not trying to scare you. If it were my mom first I would call local drug authorities and immediately report this doctor. And I would run, not walk - but run to get her help immediately. Those amounts of Lortab alone could cause liver damage, not from the narcotic aspect but the aspirin or acetominophene in them, those are huge doses the way she is taking them and NO . Trust me, I am not a doctor-but I am 4 weeks post-op from spinal fusion, and I am starting to wind down from all the pain meds. At this point I am taking Vicoden ES(7.5/325). I take three tablets daily and if the pain is really bad I may take up to five for the day, never all at once. There isn't a reputable doctor alive that would ever prescribe pain meds that frivolously unless the patient was in serious condition in which case they would be totally different meds-monitored closely and prescribed properly. This sounds like the doctor involved has absolutely no concern for the patient-sounds like a drug dealer. If your post is true take action ASAP, and again it was not my intention to scare you, but please take this problem very seriously. God Bless, R
