Please help I need encouragement

As you know I quit taking vicodin 13 days ago. A Few days ago I told you about my experience with ultracet because of a bad ear infection. Well the ear infection has not gone away and the pain is some of the worst pain I have ever felt in my life with the exception of kidney stones. Well my doctor finally diagnosed the problem as chronic allergies and put me on some steroids to shrink the inflamation in my ear, and gave me some nasal spray for the nasal discharge.

I am discouraged because everything I have tried to alleviate the pain has not worked, Alieve, motrin, aspirin, tylenol, I even tried taking benydril to knock myself out. Finally yesterday I went back to the doctor and told him that I cannot live like this and he again gave me ultracet. I was desperate and took two of them 75 mg. The pain went away in about 20 minutes. He gave me 8 of them.

Right now I am getting ready to go to work and the pain is coming back. I feel that I have been hit in the head by a sledgehammer when the pain gets bad.

The last time I took the ultracet was 12 hours ago and I think that I can grin and bear it for 12 hours at a time. But the ultracet did alleviate the pain. The pain is hell and I don't want to have to go through that again.

Please advise.

Keith

Re: Please help I need encouragement

Kieth,
I think you will be ok if you take them as presrcibed, especially if you only have 8 of them. Just don't get trapped, they are very addictive. We all can talk ourselves into taking the pills for one reason or another. I was just 80+ days clean and had a wreck had a concusion, stitches and very bad neck pain. I basically got a script for 75 vics, I honestly needed them the first 4 days, However the next 6 the pain was almost all gone and I ate them like candy. I kept telling myself you have already blown it, may as well take the rest of the bottle. All that did was get me right back to day 1 after 80+ days. That is the trap you need to watch out for. I am now back on day 11 and I still could kick the Hell out of myself for screwing up. You are in a very difficult situation, just be careful when trying to manage this pain. Don't screw up like I did. It does'nt take much to get trapped.
Good Luck

Re: Please help I need encouragement

Keith,
I'm going thru something similar with several of my teeth being infected, been on antibiotics for over a week, pain making me freakin delirious at times.I finally gave it up and filled a prescription for tylenol 3's,took em',didn't help a bit.In fact, made me feel like total crap.Point being though, legitimate pain that interferes with your activities of daily living needs to be treated.IT'S OKAY!!!You are aware of your addiction issues,so just keep on eye on that part and then take what you need to alleviate your pain. And no more. When the pain and the prescription is over,it's over.No asking for more.Don't beat yourself up,there's no reason to make yourself suffer.Take care of yourself, and keep things in check!!!IT WILL BE OKAY!!
Take Care,Stacie

Re: Please help I need encouragement

Thank you guys for your understanding. I guess once you have been addicted like I was, you walk a fine line between using a pain killer reasonably for pain and abusing it. I really don't like taking ultracet. It does take the pain away but I feel kind of drousy all day long. I am doing my best to wait as long as possible before taking anymore. My ear does not hurt right now although it is totally plugged up and ringing. As long as there is no pain I am not going to take ultracet. Even with that I am doing my best to space it out to 75 mgs every 12 hours.

But I decided today that even if my ear is killing me I will not take this past five days which will be Sunday. I would rather be in pain then be addicted to drugs. I hope that the pain resolves itself by Sunday. My allergies get increasingly worse every spring. I guess I am going to have to live with it.

Keith - it's not normal to have such severe ear pain with allergies. You need to go back and find out what is really causing this. Seriously, this pain is extreme. You should tell your doc that you need the problem fixed... if it's not... and you have to take these pills any more than just a few days, you WILL relapse. I mean, the odds will be against you but I'm serious, it's not normal to have this pain from even the most severe allergies. Is it an infection and are you taking antibiotics? Also, normally... when I had my sinus migraines, those Steroids would do the trick every time. Just force your doc to fix the problem. We are here for you!

Banker I do not know what to do. The relief from the ultracet has now worn off. I only took them 8 hours ago too. This is ridiculous, my ear feels as though someone is sticking a knife in it. It is almost bringing me to tears. My wife is on the phone right now and I am damn close to having her drive me to the ER. I mean I have not had an ear infection since I was in fourth grade. Why is this happening now when I went through a good bout of wd's from the stinkin vikes. I can barely type now and the thought of getting hooked on some other crap is more then I can stand to think about.

I am sorry but I hate pain! My ear hurts severly and it just started again about twenty minutes ago. What in the heck do I do? I don't want to get addicted again. But the stinkin ultrcet is the only thing that is giving me relief for right now. I know the risk of taking them. But I really hate feeling this kind of pain it is awful.

I am off to the ER my ear is killing me and I am not going to take ultracet another second. My wife is going to drive me and I am going to ask the attending physician to do something! This is awful. Banker you are right if I don't something now then I am going to end up right back where I started, hooked on drugs again. Wish me luck.

I agree with what the general consensus seems to be. Pain medication, when prescribed, can be very therapeutic. Just be careful to stick to what the label says, if you're concerned about addiction issues. I had to have surgery last year, and I'm no martyr. I took what they gave me. I stayed with my mom post-op and had her dispense that medication as prescribed. I didn't feel bad about it and neither should you. It was medically indicated. Don't go overboard and it should be cool.

Re: Please help I need encouragement

I went to a ent specialist tonight and they did a probe of my ears and they found out that I have bubbles and fluid in my left ear so they gave me a super strong steroid. I have had to take the ultracet to alleviate the pain. I have done my best to space the ultracet out at once every 24 hours. Sometimes when the pain is really bad I take two every 12 hours. Believe me I have tried everything for the pain including 800 mg of motrin and it does very little to help. I hate taking the ultracet and I know that I am probably going to have some wd's when I don't have to take them anymore. But since I am a sales manager and I have people that I am responsible for I have to be at work. And I can't walk around feeling like I have been hit on the side of my head with a bat. I hope this goes away soon. One of the nurses I spoke with tonight said that she had something very similar to what I have and she said it lasted for weeks.

Hi Keith,

Been reading about your trouble with your ears - ear pain can be quite horrible! You have the right attitude about taking the meds because you have a fear and that's good - it will help keep you on the straight and narrow.

Hot towels on your ear might help to alleviate the pain too.

Re: Please help I need encouragement

Hi Stacie, B, Kathi, kelleigh. Thank you so much for your encouragement. I honestly could not believe that this was happening to me. Yeah I quit the vikes and then get this horrible ear problem and have to take ultracet. My ability to hear in my left ear is beginning to get better. However the pain does start to bother me at about the 10-12th hour after I have taken two 37.5 mg of ultracet. I took two of them this morning when I woke up at about 8.00 am and then took two more at about 8.00 pm this evening because the pain started to come back. I am hoping that the pain will diminish a little more tommorrow as to be able to space out the pain meds even more. Since last week I have been able to space them out as far as once ever 24 hours.

I have a feeling that this is a condition that may last a few weeks due to the allergies that I have. What happens during the spring is that my nose starts running really bad. However this time it was the worst it has ever been. The more I blew my nose the more air bubbles and fluid was trapped in my eardrums. Like I said before the pain was almost as bad as a kidney stone.

The ultracet does not seem to have that feeling as vicodin of "I cant wait till my next dosage" feeling. Although I can see how it could become that over a period of time. The ultracet seems to make me kind of drousy and a little feeling of dizziness. It does take the pain away, however. If the pain is managable tommorrow then I will not take it.

After giving it much thought and being in horrid pain as long as I use it for just pain and nothing else I think that I should be okay. At least I hope. Since being addicted to the vikes for a year I have to keep a suspicious eye on all meds for the rest of my life.

Keith
