went to the doctor

I took my 20 year old daughter to the doctor today. Her withdrawls were so bad she was going bonkers. The doctor said there was no way she could taper the way the ER doctor said to. Since she only has two weeks of school left he decided to give her 40 mg of oxycontin every 12 hours for 13 days and on May 9th they will put her in the hospital to detox her for 4-5 days. She is not very happy to take the oxycontin since she wanted off of it so bad but she knows she couldn't go on the way she was with the taper.

Right now she is thinking she wasted 4 days trying to go off but I told her we needed some help. The doctor we saw was so awesome. Instead of getting upset with her he said an addiction is a disease just like diabetes or heart problem and she needs to be treated appropiately.

After she goes through the detox she is going to an inpatient program to get some more help. I know it will be hard and it will kill me to have her go there butI don't think I have another choice. These oxycodone changed her personality. She just wasn't very happy.

Please pray for her to get better. I know the power of prayer can be pretty strong. She will need a lot of support and this board gives so much of that. Thank you for listening to me and throw a little prayer my way too. My heart is broken for her. I love her and just want her to be happy.

Re: went to the doctor

Katie and Katie's Mom;

I'm so glad you went to another Dr.; the first one had a very unrealistic taper plan. It was on the verge of irresponsible. I think you have a good strategy, get through school and then full concentration on getting this addiction under control. Detox will not be too much fun but if you focus in on the end goal it’s just a task of many tasks on your plan to recovery. Remember as you progress with your road to recovery, it took time to get to where you are at, it will take time to get where you are going. What I’m saying is don’t set your expectations to high, along the lines that you will be feeling great once detox is over. Actually it takes probably 1-2 weeks to get over the more difficult phases of detox. And actually the first 2-5 days are the nasty times, then you gradually begin to feel better as each day passes. I know when I detoxed the last and final time it took approximately 30 days before I really felt 95%. It’s the ole 80/20 rule, it takes 20% of the time getting 80% better and then it takes 80% of the time to get the remaining 20% better. So once you are by the first couple of weeks you gradually begin to feel like you are getting closer to 100%.

I’m sure you will have some cravings for the pills at times, maybe every day, maybe not, but it’s important to remember that this is a war you are fighting and each day is a battle. You just need to take one day at a time and focus in on how great things are without the pills. Remember back to those previous times before you started taking the pills, remember that you were able to enjoy life, laugh, have fun, have energy, etc… Those times will quickly reemerge now that you are off the pills. Trust me; it all comes back. Also enjoy not having all of the overhead associated with being addicted to those pills. No more clock watching, no more worrying were or how you get you next bunch of pills, no more worrying about feeling sick if you miss or take your pills late.

Just visualize the end goal Katie, think about where you want to be and how you are going to get there. Think about how great it will be and the things you used to do when not taking pills. Having been where you are, maybe worse off, and where I am now I’m excited for you to get through theses next weeks so you can fully embrace life again and experience just how wonderful life is when you are pill free and naturally taking it all in. Also like I said before, you will have a few rough periods as you detox, but remember you are stronger then you think you are, much stronger. You can do this; you are young and have so much ahead of you. Don’t let these pills get in the way of what’s sure to be a great life experience. Don’t let this deprive you of the joys of life.

Exciting times, you are about to take control and win, it doesn’t get any better then that!

Anything you need let us know, so many good sources of help and support here.

Sorry to be long winded

phil
