Om Subutex and still in PAIN!!

I started taking Subutex about 8 days ago, and i feel really good, but i am still in pain, my back hurts sooo bad, so i talked to my doctor about it and he gave me a shot of Depo-Medrol ( a steroid) and a prescription for Ultram, but i have taken Ultram before and got no relief, and he said the other day he would put me on Vicodin for a month then back on the Subutex, and alternate every month while my back hurts me, but i told him today my back is still bothering me and he gave me Ultram, i don't want to keep pushing the issue of getting back on the Vic. but i am in real pain and i also work for this doctor. and i was really serious when i told him i wanted off the Lorcet and Vicodin and now i realize how much pain i am really in, and he brought that up and said " Just a week ago you wanted off these things sooooo bad, now you want to jump right back into taking them again?" and that made me feel kinda stupid, but what else and i supposed to do? I can't keep nagging him because i do work for him, but i also am in pain. What should i do? HELP!!

Re: Om Subutex and still in PAIN!!

Hi Emily's mommie!

I wanted to reply to your post since its quiet here on the weekends. I use to be a 35+ a day hydro pill popper. This board and Subutex saved my life! This board has a ton of valuable information and just read and read and read....

Are you on Subutex or Suboxone? Aren't they both meant to relieve pain as well? When I was on Subutex, it did relieve my pain as well and didn't really need anything other than that to help with WDs and pain relief as well. The back pain can also be a WD symptom. My back pain was unbearable while in WDs!

What's your dosage of Sub? Maybe ask your doctor about increasing your sub dosage. It doesn't make sense to go back to opiates even though Ultram isn't considered a true narcotic. Nonetheless, Ultram is still addicting. It works the same as sub- a long acting 12-24 hour opiate. It just sounds like you may be jumping into another roller coaster.

Good luck on getting pain relief. I know how it is to live with chronic pain. That's why basically we are all here. We are all in the same boat.

Please post if you have further questions.

Re: Om Subutex and still in PAIN!!

Hello Mommie,

I can so relate to your back pain as I've had two surgeries and am recoverying from related nerve damage. I can't imagine how hard it must be to drag yourself out of bed each day and go to work, feeling so lousy...I did that for awhile before I was healed enough and it was horrible.

Could there be any other ways to manage your pain, depending on what the cause is? Do you have any pain clinics that are close enough by that you could attend, or could your doctor recommend any other treatments or referrals to specialists? I can certainly understand your fear of becoming addicted to painkillers, but my experience when I was on them, was that the pain seemed to suck up all the benefit of the pills and I never got 'high'. I guess that's the way they're supposed to work. Once the pain was better, I didn't want or need the medication.

It sounds as if you really need good pain management and that you've already proven to yourself that without any medication at the moment, the pain is making you miserable, and that's no way to live.

I wish you all the best and pray that your back heals soon, or at least that you can get some real relief from it while you are waiting for it to resolve.

Hugs,
Nellie
