Someone started a thread about this book a while back. Some of you believed the book was true some of you didn't, some of you believed some parts and didn't believe others....Well today Oprah had a LIVE show with James Frey on it. And sure enough you guys, he LIED!!! He's saying now that he fabricated the stories to 'protect the innocent'. He says he 'thinks' that he may have had two root canals with no novicane, but he's NOT SURE NOW. The audience gasped...I am in Florida and it comes on again tonight at 9:00 eastern standard time on cable. Oprah is FURIOUS...And when she asks him why, he's stumbling over his answers and cannot give a straight answer. The main argument is that James Frey published this book as a memoir and it should have been posted as fiction. I guess I am very naive. I didn't read the book, but I saw her show back in Sept and I so believed him. His story did inspire me that if HE could become clean and sober than I could too because of what he went through. I feel like a fool now. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Did anyone see the show today?

I looked at the book at the book store and skimmed it and I Didn't feel comfortable with it so I am glad I didn't buy it. I have heard from several people it isn't true he did lie and he admits it now. what a joke.

I, for one, was intrigued bc everyone was talking about it earlier. But that is so lame--I would never give my money to that lying man. Plus, when this first started, his publisher, came out in his defence saying that all memoirs are based on the past, which can be remembered differently. Whatever, they were making $$$ on that lying book!

If you are going to embellish that much, don't pass it off as a memoir..You can't inspire people by saying "i got through this, you can too" if you were'nt even there!

I KNOW!! I couldn't believe the nerve of his publisher!! But you're right B.Y. in the end, it's all about money...Again I'm glad I didn't buy the book, but I feel so ashamed that I believed his stories! I really did believe that he had two root canals with NO pain meds guys! WHAT is wrong with me?!!

Well there is another issue too underlying his lying, and that is that many addicts took comfort from his book, and now they find out he was lying through his teeth. I know several people who took great comfort from his book, and said it helped them on their "roads to recovery". Now, they are all heavily disillusioned by this. If anything it might set them back on the drunk.
