ambien for xanax withdrawal?

Ok thought I wouldn't post anymore, but need help. Saw a psych dr today and told her I " do not want any addicting drugs!" she wants me to try ambien tonight and I am scared. I've tapered down to .25 xanax never was a high dose person. but , I did rely on xanax and dalmane for 16yrs. Now I face nothing. So guess I can look at this as a "birthday"!!! I always felt "secure" knowing I had those pills to sleep! Now, with the news about this drug I am scared? I don't want to get up in the night and take my dog out etc....But for the last few wks I've not slept due to tapering. Iknow once I get a normal sleep pattern all will be ok, can one take ambien just occassionally???

Re: ambien for xanax withdrawal?

Hi Kind,
I take ambien occationally and have no problems with it. I know from reading some posts on this board that some people have become addicted to it, mentally or physically, I'm not sure, but my doctor has assured me (actually 2 have) that there is no physically addictive substance in ambien. I have used it 10 nights in a row to get to sleep and I had no problems when I stopped using it. Now I only use it if I really can't get to sleep or if I want to fall asleep early 'cause I have to get early, etc. And I love it. It knocks me out quick and I wake up feeling refreshed with no hang-over feeling or groggyness. Are you concerned about becoming addicted to it?

Re: ambien for xanax withdrawal?

Thanks Hydro! This xanax experiance has been a living h..l! Didn't take any xanax yesterday and took the ambien, only worked for a couple hours, then had to take another one, still only 3 hrs after that, so been up since 3 am. My therapist suggested : melatonin, which several others have mentioned here. Bought some today and will try it? I had to take .12.5 this am of xanax, really ready to lose it. All day just hangin in there til tonight, once the sleep cycle gets kickin in I can handle anything!!! Lord knows I have already!! I never would have thought taking low doses of benzo's, ie xanax and dalmane would do this! but its been many many yrs of it. We are all different in tolerance, all meds effect me in a bad way, even different alcoholic drinks, can't drink anything but beer and wine, back in HS smoked pot and had bad reactions, paranoia, after this ordeal is over I am sticking to natural remedies !!!!!!!!!!! ( how long does this craziness last?)

Don't touch it - its highly addictive. Read other posts here. Stick with your xanax taper.................. you have already learned that there is no easy way................. the only way out is through. Are you seriously going to risk your recovery - all that pain that you have gone thro to get off the xanax? I cant believe anyone in their right mind would want to do that. I know the hell of coming off a benzo. Stick to your plan - you will be free of drugs and sleeping like a baby soon. You dont want to always be thinking of any drug like xanax or ambien again? It becomes a mind game? Surely the plan is to get away completely from drugs - be free. Live life fully and without the crutch of a chemical? Everything will fall into place. Just believe in yourself - you can do it. It is soooooooo worthwhile.

Re: ambien for xanax withdrawal?

yep, that is what's been bothering me, thinking "another pill"...I told the dr that and she even sd "why not stay with xanax it worked?" God, these da..dr's!!
so got the melatonin for tonight and just grinnin and bearing this ordeal. I've got one more wks worth of xanax .25 from my primary dr, and can split down to .12.5 , I've been trying not to take any but its' not working, guess I went too fast. But since I am down to .12.5 now about 2 wks, sometime 2# a day, shifting the times etc. It's amazing after taking that little bit feel improvement, not enough to relax but some improvement. Abmien scares the heck out of me and it sure didn't work last night! The psych dr told me to take double tonight, but I am NOT, like you sd keep with the taper. God I can't believe all the symptoms I am having they flucuate...gastro, twitches, tremors, ANXIETY, sweats, aches, out of body feelings so on ...My poor puppy is having anxiety now with me up and down, not sleeping etc. But not givin in, walked today, played with my pup and staying home til I can get better. God bless all of you going thru this hell, I feel your pain, there is hope, just not sure when it will get here??????????????/

If I were you I would immediately change doctors. She/he has no clue! And quite obviously no understanding of the nature of addiction to xanax and the hell it is to come off. This doesn't surprise me. Few doctors - esp in US - are really well informed about benzos. Have you read the Ashton Manual - if not - google it and ******** - its free now.
Stick to your taper plan - slow it down as much as you can - if possible change to a longer acting benzo like valium - as Ashton suggests - it will make your taper so very very much easier. Xanax is so very difficult to taper off because of its short half life - you get thrown in and out of withdrawal in between doses. Just as you describe above. Could you find a doctor who would prescribe valium for this taper? And he/she would obviously understand this whole process. That would be ideal. If not - just stick to your plan - nice and slow - but do it!! Dont deviate -and DONT substitute another addicting drug like ambien - that way lies madness.
Flush the ambien - or you are just heading for big trouble again. I am sure you dont want to face up to another addiction/taper scenario? Personally I think your doctor is being negligent. Inform yourself so that you can be in control?
At the end of all this - surely you want to be free of all drugs? I would have to disagree with Hydro above - and I would not advocate using ambien or any drug "on an occasion" - this just shows that you still have the "stinking thinking" related to drugs. Ultimately drugs are still in the background - still an option for you. Nope - that is just no good and in time you will find yourself back in the pit of despair and addiction. You really must let go of all that kind of thinking - let it go.................... It will be a new you who emerges after this taper - a person who can live life - deal with all its ups and downs like any other normal person - without having to resort to the aid of pills! Normal people live life like that! And you surely want to be just normal? We have the most appalling pill culture - there is literally a pill for everything - and I think you have to break free of that sort of thinking - for only then can you truly be free.
Good luck, you are going in the right direction - dont let anyone tempt you to add any more pills to this equation or you will never break free.
Will be interested to hear how you are doing............
As I really do know - having come off ativan by way of valium in a long slow taper over 6 months. And I can assure you that I will NEVER touch another benzo or sleeping pill ever again in my life. Would rather just give up sleep!!! Much easier to solve...............
Take heart.............
