No Choice

Hi. I am addicted to the illicit use of methadone. I suppose I need help but my insurance is HMO and my only choice is my network family practitioner (D.O). I googled him and looked everywhere to see if he or his profession can help me with my problem and help me detox. I go see him the day after tomorrow and I only have enough pills until then. I am afraid he is going to tell me that there is nothing he can do for me and not even prescribe me with something to help with upcoming withdrawals. Yes he may refer me to a rehab but if I do that I will lose my job and my house..I can't afford to stay somewhere for a month. All I need is something to help me get thru the withdrawals. Some advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: No Choice

I know how tough it is to be where you are and to not have the proper funds to treat the problem.
You would think the hardest part would be going for help! And here you are wanting help but not sure if you will be able to afford it.
But have no fears. I am tapering off of percocet and i have no money for a rehab either. I would also lose my job and apartment etc etc.

But you did the right thing! Be proud!!! You made the first step which was contacting your dr. He will help you. Just be completely honest with him about your situation and your finances.

He will try to work out a plan with you that will help you get off it but still keep your job!

Do not lose hope. Once you see him you will feel much better.

We are all here for you! Please be sure to stay in touch and let us know how things work out!

Re: No Choice

Not a problem! This board has been my lifesaver for the past three weeks! Everyone is so amazing! There words are so encouraging!
ANd i am just a "newbie" on here!
Wait till the others read your post and give you a reply.

They have a way of making you feel so special. You feel as if you are not all alone! There are alot of people out there with our problems. I am sure that others will be able to let you know exactly how the HMO works and might be able to give you some advice on how you can afford the treatment that you need!

Try to hang in there! You have 2 more days to go! You can do it!

Re: No Choice

either way we can help you. If you need to quit CT we can get you through that. I would suggest a TAPER with the DR. tomorrow. We are specialist with that. Anything you have to tackle day or night we are there for you. we have been where you are and back many times. There is a BRIGHT light at the end of the tunnel.

Re: No Choice

explain to him/her that you have to work and have to keep job to survive and see if dr will scribe you some pain pills that you can use to taper down off the methdone with.if he gave you some pills then you could still go to work and function allthewhile tapering off the pills.you dont state how many mgs you take per day and how long you have been using, this will make a difference as to what treatment to offer you.methadone is the worst one to come off of thats for sure.you are probably going to miss some work no matter what route you take.as long as you get clean thats all that matters in the end.good luck-spark

Re: No Choice

Hey there,

I was so reluctant to go to my doctor and tell him I messed up. SO reluctant. I came to this board, told my story and the great folks on here promised me I'd be ok. Guess what? I'm great!!

I went to my doc, told him what happened (I abused pills, very very badly) - he worked with me, started me on a taper and here I am almost finished

Good luck to you, and let us know how it goes.

All the best,
emsmom

Re: No Choice

Guess what guys..he did absolutely nothing..just told me to go to a month long rehab and sent me to his referrer. She could not find any rehab that could at least be under a week..it is hopeless for me. I really don't know what to do..so I call a hotline and he tells me I am gonna have to go to rehab for a month or more and kiss my job goodbye..what happened to those clinics where you walk in and they give you your taper medicine and you can leave and be on your way? What the hell am I doing wrong? Why the hell do I have no choices? See this is why alot of drug addicts living normal lives stay drug addicts because nobody gives a **** about helping them while they still live their productive lives!

What was the profession of your doctor? Mine was hands off on me like I had a disease and told me to go to rehab. Why can't I get a doctor like yours???!!! I have heard these other stories from other people just like yours. Yet I have been trying to find a doc like yours for months! I feel so hopeless!

Could you please help me find a doc that could taper me with out staying somewhere for months? I really thank you guys for your help and I'm sorry I seem edgy but I am so desperate and frustrated because I can't get the help I can afford. I really wish I could get into a fatal car accident tomorrow or die in my sleep tonight.

what kind of work do you do? could you take a medical leave of absence? thats what i did when i went to rehab (2 times, two different jobs) And it wasnt from a fancy schmancy office job either, i was a bartender, then a waitress) And my brother did it when he went to rehab, he does construction (cement) work. You could ask, or at least see what the guidlines are regarding medical leave of absence where you work.

and.... how are you doing today? i sure hope better !!! its not worth trying to off yourself... please, i hope you are feeling better today...
did you read the thread titled "home detox aids" or something like that.. at the top of the thread page? you could do that and go to the emergency room and tell them your story and maybe they will prescribe something to help you get through this. no matter what.. dont give up !!! YOU CAN do this. we will be here for you, help you get through with at least kind words and helpful tips, ok?

i am thinking about you....

hugs, michelle

p.s. i just went back and read that you cant afford the month thing......... but you can do it still. call you hmo and ask about another doctor referral or a list of doctors in your network that you can go to... then start calling. worth a shot to find a good doc.
good luck. m

Re: No Choice

I'm doing better today..I printed out a list of docs to call to just help me taper instead of admitting myself..I have heard pain management doctors are able to do that..but I don't know..I hear totally different stories everyday.

I am feeling better..I was rock bottom last night..seems to be that way before I go to bed and when I wake up. I really appreciate your help, you have no idea how much of a difference you people make in addicts' lives..if there was a heaven and if I was God I would put people like you in the highest place..and give you the biggest and most beautiful of all mansions.

I will definitely check out this home detox thing you are talking about. I'm starting to think that it will be my only choice.

Re: No Choice

Thank you for your kind words..... I dont know what it is about night time and early mornings, but they are my worst as well. night time just seems to bring out all the bad feelings, and the self defeating thoughts.... it helps to talk about it.
im glad you've got a list of docs, there are some good ones out there. just be patient and call them and find out what they are willing to do to help someone who wants to get better. it really will be ok. you might go through a little rough patch, but it will all be worthwhile in the end. keep me posted, k?

talk soon,

michelle
