DT's....anmesia, dementia, memory loss

Hi....

My 67 year old dad has struggled with alcohol abuse his whole life....off on, off on...the DT's, rehab etc.

He is in the hospital right now with many health problems, but the DT's are also an issue.

The last time he could have drank was 12 days ago. He thinks is 1988, and that he is 47 years old. At times he thinks he is a child. He does not know where he is.

From what I have read about the DT's, the hallucinations seem to be more related to seeing bugs etc, and usually peak at 3-5 days after the last drink.

They thought he had had a stroke or a subdermal hemmorage, but they did an MRI, a CT scan and an EEG, results all normal.

The doctors are baffled and it's just kind of a wait and see right now.

Has anyone here heard of the DT's causing these types of symptoms, and so long after drinking?

Thanks so much,
Kimberly

Re: DT's....anmesia, dementia, memory loss

Thanks

I have spoke with his dr and he is quite baffled.

My sister called the hospital and talked to my dad today and he was totally normal. If this is from the DT's, is this something you come in and out of?

Re: DT's....anmesia, dementia, memory loss

If his odd behavior continues, it could be Alzhiemers. My MIL has it and what you are describing sounds a lot like her. She'd have lucid days and then days where she thought her kids were still children. Does he repeat himself a lot? She is like a broken record because she cannot remember a minute ago, although she remembers yrs ago like they were yesterday.
Best wishes,
JB

Re: DT's....anmesia, dementia, memory loss

I am familiar with Alzheimers, and I don't think that is it, because this has happened so suddenly.

I spoke to his nurse today and she said he is going in and out of being normal, VS not.

I also read last night that for people who have gone through the DT's several times, it reall wreaks havoc on the brain. He has gone through the DT's 4 times that I know of, and it might be more.

There is something called Alcoholic Dementia and I am going to ask his doctor about it tomorrow.

Good news! He is completely lucid and will be able to go home! I PRAY he stays off the alcohol.
