Anti-Anxiety meds... What do you think?

I'm just wondering what you thoughts are about these. My therapist has mentioned them more than once and I know nothing about them. I've been drinking 9-12 beers for around 12 years. The therapist thinks that some of my issues stem from anexiety. I don't disagree with her at all. I know that I have some issues but I'mnot sure if I'm ready for meds.
She made it sound like I am already using the drink to help. Would the meds be a better idea?

Re: Anti-Anxiety meds... What do you think?

Hi,

Well lots of people drink to calm anxiety or stress or many situations. And I wholeheartedly agree with therapists, LOL, I have Bi-polar, I kinda have to. The problem with anti-anxiety meds, and they generally use Xanax, Ativan, Klonopin, or Valium is that they are all highly addictive and very easy to abuse. If you already have a tendency to drink too much to deal with anxiety or other problems, it'll probably be pretty easy to abuse the meds, because honestly they make you feel pretty good, and who doesn't want to feel good these days. If you can find an alternative source to cope with the anxiety, relaxation therapy, breathing techniques, excercise, etc. Ask your therapist to recommend some of these types of things or holistic alternatives instead of anti-anxiety meds. Why not start with the less harmful things and if they absolutely don't work then move to the serious stuff. Give the non-addictive stuff a try first.

Take care,

Kat

Re: Anti-Anxiety meds... What do you think?

Thanks for the replies. I asked the therapist if they were addictive and she said no. I didn't ask what specifically she had in mind though. She would not be the one prescribing them. I don't want to go from a drinking addiction to a pill addiction.
