Long Term Side Effects of Hydrocortisone - Addison's Disease Message Board

I have an isoloated ACTH Deficiency of the pituitary gland, a rare condition, somewhat akin to Addison's Disease. I have been taking hydrocortisone for the past 30 yrs. Can anyone tell me what the long term side effects of taking this medication may possibly be?

Hi:
I don't know "truly" what the long term affects are - I have read conflicting reports. Some say thinning of the bones while others say as long as the dosage is low (approx. 20. mg a day), then there are no side affects. Have you ever had a bone density test? My doc just started me on Cortef for adrenal dysfunction, but they did a bone density test first. I also take 1200 mg. of calcium a day with added vit. D in the winter. Dawn2

Hi Thanks for your reply. I have been taking a total of 20 mg. twice a day. How do they take a bone density tst? I was exposed to Agent Orange in South Viet Nam in the late 60's. How was your illness first found.Regards Richard

I was first diagnosed with adrenal dysfunction about 6 months ago but I suspected it for several years. Took a good doc to finally "listen" to me. Anyways, a rheumatologist or endocrinologist can order a bone density. I prefer an endocrinologist as they know how all hormones/immune system work. The bone density test is simple and pain free. You just have a small scan go over you and then they also take a scan of your hand that you don't eat or write with (the weakest). I would highly recommend it. Good luck.
