Symptoms

A few years back my rheumatologist told me that I had a sleeping adrenal gland and have been maintained by my family doctor on 5 mg of prednisone daily since.
Problem is when I am under going stress as I am now, I feel it's not enough and I had brought this stress thing up to him before and he said 5 mg of prednisone is sufficient and that I don't need anymore.

In the last few days I've had the flu with the runs, which isn't helping, and neither is worrying about a sick mother. My heart is racing, I'm short of breath upon exertion, my muscles are so weak I feel like collapsing among other things. I don't know if this is related to my adrenal but if it doesn't improve I will have to go back to see the doctor.
I don't know if my cortisol levels are high when under stress or low, so does anyone know if high levels are treated with more or less prednisone?

5mg of prednisone is a full replacement dose so your adrenals have probably shut down completely and then would never be high. Any time you have a temperature or the runs you need to increase your dose, usually double until the situation improves. If you were in a serious car accident you would need more. You should carry a card or medialert bracelet saying you are adrenal insufficient because if you are unconcious you could easily die from low cortisol levels. If your doctor doesn't know that, you need a new doctor. Do you have an endocrinolgoist you see?

Racing heart, weak muscles and short of breath might be related to thyroid problem. But you doctor should take those symptoms seriously because they are not normal, again sounds like you need a new doctor who actually listens and maybe knows more than when the next golf game is.

Re: Symptoms

Thanks, I did have tests for thyroid and they came back normal. It seems like my symptoms pop up when I'm under a stress that I can't cope with.
If my problem continues I am going to ask him to refer me to an endocrinologist.
I took my blood pressure today and it was not low, it was over high normal, Does adrenal insufficiency always have a low blood pressure?
I plan on calling the doctor on Monday.

Re: Symptoms

It isn't a specific blood pressure because lots of things affect that.

The sign of adrenal insufficiency is your blood pressure dropping when you stand up. So doctors take your blood pressure with you lying down, and then again with you standing. If the pressure goes down, that's not good. It has to go up to force blood from your feet to your heart.

You are taking 5mg/day so you shouldn't have symptoms of adrenal insufficiency unless you are stressed (accident that causes inflamation, high fever, diahrea so you can't absorb your pills properly). Once stressed, you will then have insufficient cortisol in your blood and the symptoms will show up. Of course you won't be at the doctors office then so its rarely discovered until the situation is very far advanced. Every year several people die from undiagnosed adrenal insufficiency.

Low thyroid and low cortisol result in several conflicting symptoms like racing heart, heart skipping beats, night sweats, anxiety attacks and cold clammy hands.

Re: Symptoms

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have CD but picked up a stomach flu and had severe diarrhea with chills on top of it, but no fever, so figure the low temperature must be on account of a low immune system. Too, I am dealing with a very stressful family situation now, so my problem could be stress, whatever it is it sure is making me feel awful. Hopefully I will feel better today but if not plan on calling the doctor tomorrow.
I've had these episodes before and eventually they do pass but they sure are uncomfortable. Thanks for the advice.
