Addison's Symptoms no weight loss

Here in Canada you have to wait several months to see a specialist so I've been writing down my symptoms and reading up on possible dx's.

I have the classic symptoms of addison's, muscle weakness, chronic fatigue, lightheadedness, dizzyness, cold intolerance, orthostatic hypotention, sharp pains in the abdomen and back and even hyperpigmentation. But, I have always been a big guy and my weight cycle's heavily over the course of a year, anywhere between 170-220 pounds at 5'11". When I do lose weight it's a conscious decision to diet heavily and exercise.

I eat when I'm stressed, so between these symptoms and breaking up with my gf I've put on 45 pounds during the last 8 months. I used to exercise for 2 hours every day, but over the last 8 months I've stopped due to all these problems and ate like a horse. Does gaining weight during this time completely disqualify a Addison's diagnosis?

Thanks for any input, any help is much appreciated.

Re: Addison's Symptoms no weight loss

Hi. From what I've read weight gain doesn't neccessarily exclude Addison's. I read that in rare cases some people have no weight loss or even weight gain.

Where abouts are you in Canada? I'm located in Ottawa and only had to wait 2 months to get into my endo, and he's noted as the local Addison's guru. Sometimes it just has to do with location and how hard your GP is pushing for you. I called my doctor's referral section once a week until they gave me my appointment time.

Re: Addison's Symptoms no weight loss

Thanks for the help! I'm in Vancouver and I've had to fight my GP all the way. She's convinced all my symptoms are from depression. After going to a walk in clinic I've been referred to neurologist later this month.

If anyone has any experience with an excellent endocrinologist in BC I'd love to hear about it.

I have a feeling I'll need to referred again once I see the neurologist.

Re: Addison's Symptoms no weight loss

I don't have any experience with an endo in BC, but as I will be on the island next month, I've been doing some research myself on local endos. I found one in Victoria that seems to be strong in adrenal problems. It's a bit of a trek from Vancouver I know, but if you're anything like me you're willing to go whereever you need to for answers. His name is Dr. Richard Phillips. If my endo here isn't able to get something together for me, I'm planning on giving this a call.

Have you had your cortisol levels tested yet? If those come back as being low, your doctor will have to refer you. Call and request blood requisitions for cortisol, sodium and potassium to start. Some doctors are better than others, but those are the first levels you want to check.

Your right! I'd travel anywhere to get some answers. Thanks for the name.

I haven't had my cortisol tested yet, but my sodium and potassium are normal. I've also had my TSH checked and have been tested for reactive hypoglycemia. Everything checks out except for a low neutrophils count and above normal calcium.

This pretty much rule's out hypothyroidism, but leaves me with addison's and hyperparathyroidism. I have many of the problems associated with addison's however.
