Has anyone every experienced total loss of smell and taste do to allergies? It sounds like a bad head cold when I talk and it has been like this for 7 weeks with no smell or taste. Any advise?

I have the same thing, I just went to Dr last Tues, said I had a sinus infection plus my allergies are bad...

Hope that helps you out, I'd check with your Dr though, you just never know with sinuses...

thanks for the reply!

Yea I went to the doctor and he said i got a sinus infection. He gave me Nasonex and I've been on it for 2 1/2 weeks now with no improvement or change at all. I went back yesterday and another doctor told me to take Flonase. I'm a little frustrated because it seems that Flonase is similar to Nasonex so why would it work? Anyone out there with suggestions?? I need my smell and taste back!!!

you may like to see an ENT specialist. I lost my sense of smell/taste over a year now and am only now beginning to see some light at the end of the tunnel. I've seen allergy specialists - i'm allergic to cats, and an ENT specialist. I've tried anti biotics, nasal and oral steroids and eventually surgery for sinusitis - polyps etc. I've been on anti biotics for a month now, after a week of oral steroids and recently began using a nasal irrigator - and (touch wood) my sense of smell has been with me for about a month

Hello all, I was reading everyones post about loosing smell and taste. I had that a few years back went to my Dr. I had at the time new doctor now. Took x-rays of sinsus and had a cat scan done. There a cyst that was on my sinsuses. Ended up having surgery that he recommended. I'm still not any better than I was before. I also had polyps but the surgeon never removed them. So. I'm still with sinsus problem. I can smell somewhat but not smelling might mean a blockage somewhere. Ask about it and get x-rays. I have a new doctor and like her alot. Peace, Debra

OMG have had same problem on and off for over a year. It is a sinus infection. on antibiotics for months had surgery to clean sinuses out. Was good for 3 months and got another infection. Am now doing antibiotics and anti fungal meds direct to sinuses via nebulizer. After this will have another CT scan to see if inffection has cleared. If not next step is infectious disease doctor. Am about ready to chuck the whole thing and just learn to live with it.

Hi guys! Thanks for your input!

I have another question though. Besides your loss of smell, are there any other symptoms you have? Like very stuffy nose or post nasal drip?? The reason I ask is because I don't know how serious my condition is compared to yours. The only other symptoms I have is slight stuffiness. It's weird because during the day maybe my left nostril will be a little stuffy, then later on in the day my right nostril gets a lil' stuffy while the other gets totally clear! They seem to take turns being stuffed up!!

I hope everyone gets better!

I thought I was the only one with this problem! It is the most damn frustrating thing that I have dealt with in a LONG time. Mine seems to change by the half hour!! And when I wake up in the morning, usually one nostril is COMPLETELY plugged. It causes alot of anxiety- because one minute youre used to breathing one way, the next minute it totally changes! GRRRRR

I used the following medications for this:

Nasonex
Tri Nasal
Nasarel
Zicam Allergy (OTC)
Flonase

The ONLY 2 that worked are Flonase and Zicam (Amazingly enough). Flonase actually works the best for me, though. I had some sort of lung irritation earlier in the year, took Advair and it was gone. Fluticasone Propionate seems to work well! Give the Flonase a shot for at LEAST 7 days. I have been on it for about 12, and have just started to consistently notice the difference when it wears off- but it IS working.

Oh Yeah- my sense of smell is shot too. Except for real close stuff or real FOUL odors....

Thanks for the reply Nickey,

Good to hear that the Flonase is working for you. However, I actually have been using Flonase for close to 4 weeks now with little improvement when I started it. Maybe I'm a little picky but the only major problem I have is my impaired smell. The stuffiness is still there but not much. All I want is my smell to come back. I don't think the Flonase will do it for me since I've been on it for a long time. A friend of mine suggested I get anti-biotics since it could be an infection in my sinuses. I might try that.
