Allergy vacuum cleaners - Allergies Message Board

Does anyone have any info about the best allergy vacuum cleaners to buy? SO far I have come up with Nilfisk and Miele. I am really needing to buy one soon, so any help would be much appreciated!! Thanks.

Rainbow vacuums. Several friends have them and think they're great.

There are no vacumn cleaners that reduce allergy symptoms. Some profess to remove allergens by means of hepa filtration but filtration doesn't reduce SYMPTOMS.

Vacumning is one of the worst things you can do for allergies. It stirs up settled allergen. The best thing would be to get rid of the carpets and rugs.

Don't waste your money of vacumns and air cleaners. Spend the money on getting rid of carpets and installing hardwood or vinyl floors if you can. You can rid these surfaces of allergens fairly easily by using a swifter or similar product that doesn't stir up dust. If you could see what lives in your carpet, you'd be creeped out.

I removed my carpets a few years ago and just left the bare hardwood floor. It's great because it's easier to remove the allergens. However, every time you open or close a door or there's a breeze, the dust is sent into the air. My allergies were much worse and I ended up bringing in new carpeting. This way the allergens sort of "stick" to the carpet and don't fly around. I treat the carpeting as an allergy trap. It covers the whole floor but is not installed as wall to wall carpeting. Whenever it gets to dirty, I throw it out and bring in new carpeting. It's a little expensive, but I don't have to do it very often. If you bring new carpeting into your home, don't forget to keep the windows open for a couple of days to air out the chemicals that are released from brand new carpeting. Some people have chemical sensitivities that will be aggravated by the carpet. Also, the vacuums with the HEPA filtration do help me. Before I purchased one of these I'd get very sick after vacuuming. Now I can vacuum as often as I like without any symptoms. I hope this helps.
