How long before allergy shots become effective?

Ive been getting allergy shots for a month now (twice a week) and the Nurse says that i'm still on fairly low doses. I understand it can take a while before they begin to take effect. Can anyone share their own experience and what to expect? Since i feel pretty bad now (PND, Congestion, Headaches, Ear Pain) will i feel worse since Allergens are being introduced into my system or are the doses such that you don't feel them and they just juice up your immune system - i'm unclear as to whether your Supposed to feel worse (so that you know their effective) before you get better.

Re: How long before allergy shots become effective?

I don't know how much I buy into these allergy shot things. I used to work in an office and the girl who sat next to me was highly annoying to say the least. Constantly coughing, sneezing, sniffling and blowing her nose. I mean constantly!! It drove me crazy. One day I couldn't take it anymore. I was rushed trying to get some paperwork done for the boss who was on my case about it, and she was a constant distraction. I suggested that she see a doctor about that cold. She said it was allergies and she's been getting allergy shots. Then she went on to say that she has been getting them 2 times per week for 6 years. 6 years!!! She claimed there was a marked improvement, but I can't see how. She couldn't go 30 seconds without sniffling, or a full minute without sneezing or blowing her nose. Sounded more like a gross waste of money to me.

I ran into her 3 or 4 years later. She was still taking the allergy shots and she was still no different than when the 2 of us worked in the same office together.

I can't remember where I read or heard this, but it is said that only 1/3 of people will find complete or mostly relief from allergy shots, 1/3 will find partial relief, and 1/3 will find no relief at all. Allergy shots aren't for everyone~ some take better to it than others.
But medical science is advancing quickly, I don't think it will be much longer before something like Xolair is available for hay fever. So keep your fingers crossed & waiting..in the meantime remember environmental controls!=)
