Chronic stuffy nose. What do I have? What should I do?

I have this chronic stuffy nose that started this month, and it usually alternates between each side of my nose. Snot drips out of the stuffed up side, and it is clear colored..... which should mean that I probably do not have an infection up there.

I have been taking generic sudafed for over a week, and although it takes care of the stuffy nose somewhat, each day, my symptoms are repeated.
Can I keep taking this sudafed stuff day after day, week after week? The packaging says to stop taking sudafed if symptoms do not improve after 7 days. However, the symptoms do go away for a few hours when I do take this medicine.

From what I've read, it doesn't seem there is much doctors can do about this.

This is the first Spring I have spent in Los Angeles in the last 6 years. I spent the last 5 years in the San Francisco area, which is sea-level and by the ocean. Nice weather there. But I've lived in Los Angeles most of my childhood, and I don't remember having stuffy nose that lasted this long...

Is there mold in your area? That can cause allergy problems, and mold doesn't always get mentioned on the allergy reports.

well, there is mildew when it's wet. But los angeles is known for it's dry smoggy weather. I don't know of any other mold around here.

Re: Chronic stuffy nose. What do I have? What should I do?

hmmm. i just looked at the non allergic rhinitis thread. it sounds like i might have just that.... stuffiness due to irritation by particles in my nose.

I tried to squirt water up my nose, and when I did, it triggered a sneezing attack, which then led to a pretty intense runny nose. There was a lot of snot.

I was perfectly fine the last 5 years. My apartment always had a THICK layer of dust everywhere, and I was fine amidst all that dust. Maybe SF was too clean, and my nose got spoiled by the fresh air.

It looks like I'll be taking sudafed everyday from now on. I don't care what side effects there are. Screw the allergies!
