Question hives from bandage...

At a doctors appointment late March, they drew blood, applied a bandage, the usual. Later that day removed the bandage and saw hives start to show-break out where the bandage had been. I bought new bandages, applied them to now cover the hives. That felt odd, so removed them, the hives were worse and where the bandage was briefly, after removing it, it left a burn like marking and since then turned darker like a scar, has cracked like a chemical burn (had that once) and is still there now. Have been applying gold bond, letting the air get to it, trying not to scratch, now using Neosporin.

At an appt. yesterday the asst. noticed it, told her about it & how I don't use powders with fragrance, how I keep it to cornstarch, use scent free things so on and so forth. She suggested I call that office (I did) and ask if they used gloves with the powder in them (they don’t) what bandages were used. She suggested I use paper tape and gauze (ok, will do). I have a history of contact dermatitis but have not known the trigger (hard to do), so this is the first reaction that can be traced to a specific something...

Has anyone out there had hives from bandages? If so, do you have other allergies? Is it typical that if you have one allergy, you could have more then one? In the early 90's had a test (small prickly pad about 2” x 4”) which was inconclusive because the entire area swelled, red, itched like crazy, so that was unspecific but did have allergy shots for a short while, which did not work out.
Would a R.A.S.T. test help identify allergy offshoots? Or is there a better test for that? Would I have to go to an allergist or could another doctor do the test, like a rheumy (have appt. coming up)? How did you find out which caused the reaction, was it the bandage, the adhesive, the gloves they wore???

What OTC medications are best to help fight a hive reaction like this? I use Benadryl tablets. Is there anything else OTC you have tried that helps that is taken orally? In the past, used hydrocortisone, calamine. Sorry for the long length. Ideas or suggestions appreciated. Thank you.

Re: hives from bandage...

Yup yup i'm very allergic 2 bandaids, medical tape, second skin, newskin, anything that has that adhesive in it. I require more medication than I can get OTC for it but usually Cutivate or Psorcon does the trick, along with an antihistamine. I do take Clarinex daily but I add Benadryl at nite if the itching is bad enough not 2 let me sleep. It's funny how you'll literally see a clear outline of the bandaid, the shape, on my skin as the rash..haha...yeah I would imagine you could try Cortizone cream, and if that doesn't work ask your doctor for a more potent cream, like Cutivate.

Some band-aids contain latex. The band-aids my family uses (Coverlet, I think) are latex free because my mom has a latex allergy. She also has allergies to tree pollens and grass. I understand that latex allergies are very common, so that's probably something to look into (getting tested for latex allergies)

Angry Re: hives from bandage...

Yes, I've just discovered lately that I'm very allergic to the adhesive in bandages, too. I had foot surgery, and my foot is having major swelling problems because of the welts and blisters that have formed because of the bandages holding the gauze on my foot. I've changed the way I wrap my foot, but it's taking a long time to heal.
