Autistic Daughter w/ Allergies. - Allergies Message Board

Hey everyone my daughter is autistic and has bad allergies. The doctor had her on Periactin and it worked wonders. I have been trying to ween her off of the periactin because it is a heavy sedative and I am afraid it might be making her behaivor worse. I have started to notice the watery eyes and stuffy nose getting worse since i cut down the dosage, so i know I will have to keep her on something. I was wondering if there are any supplements or vitamins that are good for allergies, or a med that doesnt cause drowsiness. Thanks .. Rochelle

Hi, I took Periactin forever as a child - helpful but I can still remember how it smells!

Have you tried Zyrtec or Claritin syrup (how old is she)? Zyrtec, Claritin, and Allegra are the current "non-sedating" anthistamines. You might try her on half a dose first.

I have severe allergies and allergic asthma. Keeping up your daughter's fluids is very important. Water or 100% fruit juice with vitamin C. Also, vitamin C is helpful. If she can't have too much sugar (i.e., cannot have fruit or fruit juice with every meal b/c of the sugar), talk to your doctor about an appropriate vitamin C supplement. The body doesn't store vitamin C, so taking 100% of daily need just one time during the day isn't as effective for me as getting 50-60% of RDA 2-3 times a day.

Hey there thanks for the response. My daughter is 20 months old. She is taking super nu thera which is a very powerful multi vitamin for autistic kids. It has a lot of vitamin c in it. She is also on digestive enzymes to help with the vitamin absorption. Thanks for the advice i will have to try one of those non sedatives you listed. "Thanks again. rochelle

I hope you can find something that works for your little one. It sounds like you can tell when she's not doing well with her allergies, and that is very important, esp. if she cannot tell you how she's feeling. Whatever you can do to find out what she is allergic to and try to avoid that, that will be helpful as well.
