What is Wrong with me? - Allergies Message Board

Since the middle of August I have been experiencing shortness of breath, I went to the Dr. and she said I had a sinus infection after two different antibiotics I still didn't feel any better. I did seem to have some relief for a week or two and now my problems are getting worse, I have a lumpy feeling in my throat when I swallow and now my throat just below my chin feels extremely tight and swollen, I have pressure in my head and my face feels like it is throbbing I'm on Zyrtec,Rhinocort,Flovent and Maxair inhalers they are not helping any .I am going for a pulminary function test tomorrow and they wont test me for allergies until we get the results from that. Could I have developed an allergy all of a sudden to my dog? I have had him for over 2 years and have had dogs all my life and never any problems. I do smoke and am fighting with quitting as I type this, I am so depressed over this everyone thinks I'm full of it and I feel that there is something terribly wrong. Does anyone know if the tightness could be from the dog, It actually seems to get worse after I leave the house and sleeping isn't a problem. I'm getting desperate.

I don't know what is wrong with you. I have had the same symptoms since the beginning of September. I have had my heart checked and my lungs checked. Everything seems to be okay. I take flonase and sometimes an inhaler when things get rough. This is about every other day.

My nose is also stuffy and my voice gets a gritty sound at times. I guess that I have allergies and post nasal drip and that somehow irritates my bronchi and makes me feel short of breath.

Like you, I am getting tired of this and would like it to go away. I hope that someone can help.

I think your doctor was very perceptive to think you had a sinus infection. What antibiotics did you take? Sinus infections need strong drugs to cure. I'm suprised your doctor did not order a sinus CT to insure that the infection was cured. Sometimes the antibiotics cure the infection, but there is a blockage, so all the gunk never drains. This causes you not to feel any better and sets you up to get reinfected. Thick post nasal drip from allergies can also cause shortness of breath, so regardless of the results of the Pulmonary function test you should probably get tested. You can try taking Mucinex to thin out your post nasal drip. Also, drink LOTS of water, it will also help your post nasal drip to drain.

Thanks for your responses, I think you could be right, I went and had the Pulminary Test today and the man who ran the test said everything fell into the normal range although technically he is suppose to wait for the pulminologist to do the reading. One of the antibiotics I was on was Ketek and the other was green but I cant remember the name of it so maybe it is sinus gunk draining because I do feel it dripping into my throat. I can deal with a lot of stuff but if it turns out that I've become allergic to my dog I will be so broken hearted. I also went to the DR again and she said she could tell by my throat that there is drainage and I have a polyp in my nose although everytime I go in there is. I also have anxiety issues that are probably not helping. Next stop is an allergist and I hope they can figure me out. I will give the Mucinex another try too. Thanks.

Polyps can totally block sinus drainage. Have you asked your doc about a CT scan of the sinuses? Perhaps you've developed more than the one you know about.
