Ducts Cleaning

I was about to have a company clean my ducts because I'm extremely allergic to dust and dust mites, when my doctor told me it's a waste of money. WHY????? I have the kind of heat that blows air, and my ducts are FULL of dust... I can see it from outside. How come she told me not to bother.... anyone????

Re: Ducts Cleaning

I have heard this too, and as a result have never had my ducts cleaned. The theory is that yes, the procedure cleans your ducts well, but it dislodges an awful lot of dust that is then released everywhere throughout your house. I guess normally, that dust buildup in the ducts is fairly stable/contained. If you use a good HVAC filter and change it regularly, along with filters at the registers, you are supposedly well protected from the dust buildup.

The jury is still out for me - I would have to be pretty well convinced of a good seal throughout the whole duct-cleaning system before I would try it.

Re: Ducts Cleaning

Before you duct clean. Have you cleaned off all the vents with mild soap and water where the air blows out? Also you should have one or two intake vents which you could damp mop clean also and change the filters like every 2 months or more often.
As soon as I notice that the blue color on my filters is lighter, I change the filter.
I have gone around the entire house with a long ladder damp mopping off lightning fixtures, vents, curtain rods. You wouldn't believe the dust that accummulated.
